Another victim of Bush's War Of Terror; how are the ROADS in your area?
In the areas I drive frequently, in CT and MA, the highways and roads are in the worst shape I've ever seen them. I was just reading about the mayor's conference, and their complaints about funds being drained from schools and other urgent areas. Like roads? I don't know the facts on this one, because I haven't seen anyone reporting on it, but it stands to reason that if there is no money for anything else but war, highway funding would probably be taking a hit, too. But if they're ignoring the basic road surfaces due to lack of money (I-84 north of Hartford has big open potholes and large sections of broken, cracked, bone-jarring pavement), what the hell are the bridges and support infrastructure like? Are ANY inspections/repairs being made? Because they're certainly not doing any maintenance/repair work on the Connecticut or Massachusetts highways!

1. Our cities are cutting back programs, and closing certain schools.
Just a year ago, they were trying to build more schools to house all the kids. Guess the housing boom is gone, and fed money won't cover the expenses.

2. Virginia is about to impose all these horrible 'civil fees' for driving offenses
Edited on Tue Jun-26-07 09:30 AM by soothsayer
designed to fund $1 billion in road repairs. (Drive 20 miles over the limit, get the fine PLUS a $1050 civil fee, payable in three easy installments). Starts July 1. Beware!

3. They're working on highways here in NM,
at least the Federally funded, gas tax supported interstates.

The city streets are awful. I haven't seen the paving crews out since April, when they were filling in potholes. Half those potholes are back and some streets are really treacherous. In my own neighborhood, the streets are so awful that I have to ride my scooter at ultra low speed to avoid either dumping it or sending my spinal column up through my skull.

It's pretty clear that everything is being drained to feed the war and hide the tax cuts to the rich. I await the tumbrils, but I'm terribly afraid they'll be unable to make the trip over the local streets.

4. They're always working on highways in NM.
the orange barrel capital of the world!

Then again, here in OH there's a freeway interchange that's been "under construction" for going-on 6 years - and no progress to show for it. It's so obvious a pork-barrel project it's not even funny.

6. There was a move to change the state flower to the orange barrel
Do you know what Albuquerque means?

It's an obscure Navajo word meaning "orange barrel."

11. Lemme guess, a contract with Kokosing that's been going on forever...
I think that here in Columbus, Kokosing has an open ended contract with the city. The freeways were so badly engineered here that there are parts of them they may never be able to fix without crippling the city. the 70/71 spilt for instance. If they were to close it, this town would come to a standstill everywhere.
