Did Gore's agent just tip his hand?
Did Gore's agent just tip his hand?

What do Al Gore, Bill Frist and Rick Santorum have in common? The answer, that they are all represented by the Harry Walker Agency, is sure to elicit a big, groaning "so what?". The interesting thing is why I know that.
I am currently studying Chinese in Taiwan, and recently it was announced that Al Gore had accepted an invitation from Democratic Progessive Party Legislator Tien Chiu-chin to come to Taiwan for three speaking engagements in September. Having studied the Chinese language for several years, I was considering the best route to volunteer to help members of the travelling party with their communication needs during their stay. (At the very least, I thought it might help me to score a ticket for one of the events!)
That said, my heart sank a bit when I noticed a tiny - one paragraph - article in the Taipei Times titled "Al Gore visit postponed". I had a big 'hmmmmmmm' moment as I read further:

* quinn's diary :: ::
*

Tien, who invited Gore to visit Taiwan to promote awareness on global warming, told reporters yesterday that she received an e-mail from the Harry Walker Agency, which has the exclusive right to arrange Gore's speeches, saying that Gore had canceled all his scheduled events in the next six months.

I hesitated a bit writing this diary, as I am sure even Gore-heads are tired of those "BREAKING: Al Gore had this look in his eye at a book-signing yesterday!" kind of diaries. This seems to add a little 'meat' to those 'potatoes', though, don't you think?

The 'article' threw up one other tantalizing tidbit:

Tien said the reason for the cancellation was that Gore was considering a presidential bid.

58. Agreed, intriguing...exciting even...
But "considering a bid" really isn't news. We've known along that he's considering (i.e. evaluating) this option. Otherwise he wouldn't be so coy/smart, leaving his options open.

Still...

GO AL GO!!

We really, really need you.

70.  Al Gore the conscience of the Democratic Party
Please! Al run the country needs you

June 27 -- A new poll in New Hampshire has Al Gore leading the entire Democratic field in the nation's first primary, with a six point lead over Hillary Clinton, 32 to 26. "Gore is the only Democrat, including Hillary, who can instantly melt the field," said David Paleologos, director of the Suffolk University Political Research Center."

Do you want a replay of 2000 where Gore doesn't fight back on another steal--?

He has, no doubt, been considering it for years. Nobody jumps into something like this impulsively, except maybe Mike Gravel.

When he has finished considering, THEN I'll get excited.

23. the bolded part of that tidbit in the OP isn't the really important part, though
Edited on Wed Jun-27-07 10:51 AM by kgfnally
HERE'S the important part:

"Tien, who invited Gore to visit Taiwan to promote awareness on global warming, told reporters yesterday that she received an e-mail from the Harry Walker Agency, which has the exclusive right to arrange Gore's speeches, saying that Gore had canceled all his scheduled events in the next six months."

If you're someone like Gore, who has speaking events and book signings and whatnot scheduled- well, damn near everywhere- you don't go and cancel ALL your events for half a year unless there's something big in the works that will take up all your time.

In other words, it could be very very good news or very very bad news. There's no indication Gore is ill, and I haven't heard anything about others in his family facing a terminal or very serious illness.

What could possibly cause him to cancel all his speaking events for half a year?

:)

37. He also supposedly has a book coming out in September
"Solutions" which he started work on right after The Assault On Reason as a follow up to AIT is slated to come out this September, so I now wonder if that has been put off as well? I actually would need to see verification that this story is actually true first before I would believe he would do this. I would also think he would post that on his own blog. I know the Nobel is given out in December which is six months from now, so perhaps he wishes to lay low until then so as not to appear as though his endeavors are only to that end?

And also notice how this piece without any corroboration made the front page, but the original news that he was actually going to Taiwan to give this speech on global warming would not even have made it out of the gate. And I agree, this is not something you take on lightly, so if he indeed is considering it I hope he is then taking this six months ( if that is true as well) to get out somewhere away from the groups and other influences on all sides so he can truly search his heart without all the pushing on him from people who don't understand what that process entails.

18. This is really bad timing for his agent to come out and say that
Live Earth is coming up in less than two weeks and it is very important that that show is about global warming and not Gore's plans for the Presidency. They can start talking about a run all they want after Live Earth, but doing it beforehand could backfire big time.

29. That would backfire big time if he did that.
I imagine many of the artists would be extremely pissed off if he did that. The event is supposed to raise awareness of global warming, not of any individual politician. The cable channels that were broadcasting the event may even cut out before the end of the concert if he announced, as people could easily make the case that it was a campaign event and demand equal coverage for the other candidates.

For Gore to announce at Live Earth would be seen as highly inappropriate by many, and there is no way any good could possibly come out of it for him. If he wants to run he needs to wait until Live Earth is over to even suggest that he wants to run.

34. I agree, if this is even true
Edited on Wed Jun-27-07 12:38 PM by RestoreGore
I find it VERY hard to believe that any agent would divulge that kind of information to a representative of another country before it was divulged here by the man who would need to be the one to say it to actually make it so. And as you have stated, with Live Earth coming up in less than two weeks this could actually be bad for him if it becomes big gossip. For those like myself who are so psyched about attending this event for the planet to now feel as though we are being used for a political campaign is not a feeling I personally like one bit. That is why I really hate these speculative types of articles where there is no real evidence to back up anything, and wonder who really starts them and whose side they are really on.

However, I have e-mailed the Harry Walker Agency about this and asked for a clarification. Whether or not I get one is another story. Also, why isn't this in the news here? It isn't on Yahoo, Google, or any other outlet, and considering the time difference between Taiwan and here you would think it would have made it by now. Sounds to me like something might have gotten lost in translation, especially since the article also claims it was actually not cancelled but postponed to next year.

Wouldn't be the first time that there was a misunderstanding and/or misinterpretation.

If true, he needs a new agency. This was very inappropriate.

It would indeed be a very poor representation of an agency to tip his hand like this before he announced IMHO - however I see this as incredibly inspiring news.

A young co-worker who has conservative trends cameup to me last week and said "Do you think Al Gore is going to run?? I can't imagine voting for anyone else right now!" I'm a grown man but I felt myself getting teary eyed .. we need Al Gore badly. I hope this means what we would like it to mean.

before my heart jumps right out of my chest...Hope springs eternal...Tonight its Champaign for all on me...Pop those corks...This man is our salvation...He is the man uniquely situated to understand how to overcome the crookedness in elections. This is the letter I sent to him a few days ago...

Dear Mr. President;

There have been desperate times in the history of our republic that great men were called to the service of our country and they rose to save our republic....THIS IS ONE OF THOSE TIMES and we the people are calling on you to come to the aid of our country. YOU ARE THE RIGHT MAN AT THE RIGHT TIME...never mind the CROOKED pug machine and the treasonous and self serving Trilateral Commission that runs it, making it near impossible for a true dem to win....A landslide will cancel all that out. AND YOU WILL COMMAND A LANDSLIDE...and will owe nothing to anyone except the people of this great country of which you are a part but then you know all that.

So please when you think the time is right, you must come to the aid of this country for I know in my heart that that is what you are contemplating. I know you will do this because you are an honorable man and your honor will demand it. When you enter you can count on all of us to send all we can and more toward your campaign. These are the most desperate of times

So I hereby thank you in advance for saving the greatest democracy that has ever lived.

126. I hope.
But I'm suspect about anything I hear before 7.7.7.

Here's hoping anyway...

129. Wet blanket time:
Dear god, what if he's sick? What if he needs that time for chemo or rehab or something?

I've always liked Al. I stuck him for him when his wife went off the deep end (a potential problem among the younger voters) and I stuck up for him when they started that "created the Internet" LIE.

Is Al the best possible candidate? No. But he's better than most of the ones we have now -- and I really like the ones we have now. Even Hillary.

My only concern about Gore running again (and WINNING again!) is that the Big Dog won't campaign for him if he beats Bill's wife in the primary. That was a big mistake last time. Bill's not in the best of shape, physically, and he's no inhuman cyborg like Dick Cheney.

Personally, I wouldn't mind a reverse Gore/Clinton ticket. I think they'd win, I think Hill'd make an excellent VP, and I think after eight years of more experience she'd make an excellent president.

Of course, where does that leave my beloved Obama and Edwards?

I don't know, but I'm more excited about our list of contenders than I've been in a long, long time.

133. Bill Clinton is too professional to not campaign for the Dem candidate.
And I'm guessing he'll want to have some chips to call in when the next president takes office. Won't have too many of those if it's Romney.

141. He didn't campaign for Gore in 2000
He's already stumped more times for Hillary than he did for Gore. A lot of that was Gore's campaign's decision -- the misplaced notion, even among Democrats, that we needed to "distance ourselves" from Monica Lewinsky and eight years of peace and prosperity.

I'd like to add that, while I do have a few problems with Bill's decisions in office, the good FAR outweighs the bad. Underneath my button-down shirt I'm actually wearing one of the many "I Miss Bill" t-shirts I bought at his library in Little Rock (if you get the chance: go, because it's truly well done).

As an example: The Big Dog carried Nevada both elections, and Bush won both times. All hinged on the ability to get just a FEW northern Nevada conservatives to switch sides. (or election fraud, but that's a whole 'nother thread:))

143. Gore was afraid of the Monica thing back in 2000. As Veep, he was
in much more danger of being painted with the same brush as Bill. Now that Bush has so effectively put Monica in perspective, Bill will be a huge asset to whomever wins the nomination. I just don't think he's the type who will want to sit the election out. Just my two cents.

161. Clinton campaigned for Gore in 2000 in the states Gore's operatives determined
Edited on Thu Jun-28-07 07:15 AM by The Count
that it would help (based on polls by Frank Lutz and comp- and MSM advice.)
While Gore definitely won then, operatives & pundits had too much of a say during that campaign (i.e - VP choice). I know he learned THAT lesson!

145. "Created the internet LIE"?
That was a statement taken out of context and twisted by the neocon spin doctors. And what incident are you referring to when Tipper "went off the deep end"? Are you talking about her wanting warning labels on profane, sexist and violent record albums that were marketed to children?

146. I think you misunderstood me.
I agree that Al Gore's statement was taken out of context and horribly twisted. That's why I emphasized the word "lie" in all caps.

I LOVE Al Gore.

I'm still not too happy with Tipper, ESPECIALLY as a parent myself. Even 20 years later. The record industry never needed to monitor "profane, sexist and violent" lyrics. Parents just need(ed) to pay more attention to what their kids are listening to. That's what I meant by "going off the deep end." Hearings on Prince albums? Gimme a break. If you didn't like the lyrics, then why did you let your kids listen to them? Smacks of government intrusion, at the very least. Calling attention to the issue was one thing, but threating congressional action?

And, in my original post, I said that I STILL supported Al Gore. I think he's great.

A lot of people are still turned off by the PRMC, though, even 25 years later, and a lot more will be turned off after the youtube commercials. Just because I like him, and because he already won one election, doesn't make him perfect.

160. Oops...never mind
Sorry, I misread the "Internet lie" part. As far as Tipper's issue, I don't agree that what she did was 'going off the deep end', but understand your position on this, too.

132. Is that a ray of sunshine...
...breaking through the dark, ominous clouds that first descended over
our country in 2000?

Please. Run. For the love of all that is American. RUN!!!

This post has seriously been the most positive, healing message I've read
since my tenure at DU. It gives me hope that this awful nightmare might
just have an end.

Our country needs Gore.

149. Maybe, Gore is
canceling all public appearances for the next 6 months because he is sick and tired of people trying to read his expressions whenever they try to prompt him into giving an answer to the question, 'are you going to run?" But still I keep hoping, as the other DUers on this thread.

And people pushing him about it EVERY DAMN DAY.

152. I think that Gore is keeping his options open
I think that Gore is keeping his options open. Hasn't made up his mind yet what he will do.

If you ask me - I think Gore-Obama would be the strongest ticket in 2008.

The best thing we can do right now is organize our own Live Earth House Parties on July 7th.

By getting behind Al Gore's current work, we can make it more likely that he will decide to run.

Let's all find ways to show our support for Al Gore! :patriot:

Visit Al's site www.algore.com and read his blog http://blog.algore.com

Get ready for Live Earth on 7/7/07: www.liveearth.org

Sign the petitions at www.algore.org and www.draftgore.com

156. Gore-Obama takes us thru to 2025
I think the next VP should be young enough to take over the Presidency in January 2017.

I can see Wes Clark serving as Sec of State or Sec of Defense.

Congress can make exemptions to the 10-year rule. They did it before.

If he's really cancelling engagements, maybe he just needs time to finish his next book.
