Very interesting..."A GI's guide to Iraq" from 1943
Edited on Wed Jun-27-07 11:08 AM by tjwash
From the folks at wired.com

In 1943, some American troops were stationed in Iraq. Here is a PDF of a War Department handbook introducing them to the country ('i-RAHK"), and providing some do's and don'ts when interacting with the Iraqi people. Some highlights:

* NEVER discuss religion or politics or women with Moslems.

* Don't stare at anyone. Remember the fear of the "evil eye".

* Knock before entering a private house. If a woman answers, wait until she has had time to retire.

* If you see grown men walking hand in hand, ignore it. They are not queer.

* You can usually tell a mosque by its high tower. Keep away from mosques. If you try to enter one, you will be thrown out, probably with a severe beating.

* There are four towns in Iraq which are particularly sacred to the Iraq Moslems: Kerbala, Najaf, samarra, and Kadhiman. Unless you are ordered to these towns it is advisable to stay away from them.

* Moslems here are divided into two factions something like our division into Catholic and Protestant denominations -- so don't put in your two cents when Iraqis argue about religion.

* There are also political differences in Iraq that have puzzled diplomats and statesmen. You won't help matters any by getting mixed up in them.

My personal "yeah that about sums it all up in a nutshell" is the last one-"There are also political differences in Iraq that have puzzled diplomats and statesmen. You won't help matters any by getting mixed up in them."

Later...

4. Just sent this to the Greatest page. Isn't it interesting that sixty years
ago, the powers that be in our country had respect for other peoples, other nations, and other religions.

And they understood that issues in those other nations were complex and couldn't be simplistically explained.

10. not really
i don't think this country has EVER had a respect for other cultures or religions (non-Judeo-Christian).

In this particular instance they did, guess it didn't last too long though.

5. My, my, but that IS an interesting find
You know how we're always being told that "it's so different over there" and "we don't know their culture very well" and so forth?

It seems, according to this handbook, that we did know these things... once upon a time.

7. Ah the evil eye...
... we caught a kid who had been tagging most of Al Qut and said if he would paint the biggest, most evil evil eye he could think of on our vehicle we'd let him go.

I have to admit that eye was pretty damn evil, but it kept crowds away from us...

which our crusaders in the current administration could never appreciate.

15. I love the tone those old manuals were written in
I remember seeing one for an old field oven we had that said "And you won't help matters by putting your greasy mitts on the assembly, so just wait for the tech to come"

Or

"Q: but isn't wearing a rubber like taking a shower with a raincoat on?
A: What damn fool told you that? You won't even notice it's there, kid."

16. Updated for 2007:
* NEVER discuss religion or politics or women with Moslems. Shoot them.

* Don't stare at anyone. Shoot them.

* Knock before entering a private house. If a woman answers, shoot and rape her.

* If you see grown men walking hand in hand, don't ignore it, shoot them.

* You can usually tell a mosque by its high tower. Blow up. mosques.

* There are four towns in Iraq which are particularly sacred to the Iraq Moslems: Kerbala, Najaf, samarra, and Kadhiman. Shoot them all.

* Moslems here are divided into two factions something like our division into Catholic and Protestant denominations -- so don't put in your two cents when Iraqis argue about religion. Shoot 'em all, and let God sort it out.

* There are also political differences in Iraq that have puzzled diplomats and statesmen. You won't help matters any by getting mixed up in them. You help them by shooting them.

19. ...as a soldier and as an individual...
Edited on Thu Jun-28-07 04:23 AM by twenty4blackbirds
more from the manual (emphasis mine)
You will enter Iraq both as a soldier and as an individual, because on our side a man can be both a soldier and an individual. That is our strength - if we are smart enough to use it. It can be our weakness if we aren't. As a soldier your duties are laid out for you. As an individual, it is what you do on your own that counts - and it may count for a lot more than you think.

American success or failure in Iraq may well depend on whether the Iraqis...like American soldiers or not. It may not be quite that simple. But then again it could.
...
The best way you can do this (prevent disunity and discontentment among Americans and Iraqis) is by getting along with the Iraqis and making them your friends. And the best way to get along with any people is to understand them.
...
That tall man in the flowing robe...is a first-class fighting man, highly skilled in guerilla warfare...If he is your friend, he can be a staunch and valuable ally. If he should happen to be your enemy - look out! Remember Lawrence of Arabia? Well, it was with men like these that he wrote history in the First World War.

But you will also find out quickly that the Iraqi is one of the most cheerful and friendly people in the world.
...
You aren't going to Iraq to change the Iraqis. Just the opposite. We are fighting this war to preserve the principle of "live and let live".

Wise words. There is many more still applicable over 50 years later. And no wonder, because Iraq is still Iraq.

If only * had read this before he skipped out of National Guard.

Edited to add: There is also a brief summary of Islam/Moslem which also compares/likens it to Christians/Christianity. Nice! Still relevant...

and one run by GWB. FDR is better.
