Kerry calls for "full disclosure of the facts" in BAE probe

US probe, senator's concern put BAE under spotlight

Thursday • June 28, 2007

The US operations of BAE Systems have come under the spotlight amid a government probe and as it emerged Wednesday that a US senator has raised concerns about allegations the British arms group violated anti-bribery laws.

<...>

BAE said Tuesday that the Justice Department had launched an inquiry into the company's compliance with US anti-corruption laws, including lucrative arms contracts awarded to BAE by Saudi Arabia.

British media reports have alleged BAE set up a 120-million-dollar (60-million-pound) slush fund for members of the Saudi royal family to secure business dating back to 1985, and of making illegal payments to those involved in its deals. The reports claim some of the funds passed through a US bank in Washington.

It emerged Wednesday that Democratic Senator John Kerry, a member of the powerful Senate Foreign Relations Committee, had weighed into the matter.

Kerry sent a letter to US Attorney General Alberto Gonzales, dated June 21, outlining his concern at reports that BAE may have "violated US anti-bribery laws in relation to its international arms deals."

"Full disclosure of the facts is essential," Kerry wrote in his letter, a copy of which was obtained by AFP Wednesday.

The senator asked Gonzales if the Justice Department had been in contact with a regulatory panel that has reviewed BAE's takeover bid for Armor Holdings, among other questions.

BAE officials in Britain have strenuously denied any wrongdoing and the company spokeswoman said Wednesday that BAE was "not aware of any specifics" with regard to Kerry's letter.

1. Yes, this was all hidden during the 2004 campaigns
Kerry was painted by the media as "soft on terrorism." As usual, the Republicans got it ass-backwards.

2. The media did know. In fact, the NYT did a very
prominent article on Kerry's approach to fighting terrorism, posted here.

This is also not the first time Kerry raised questions about the Saudis: Letter to the President on Saudi Arabia's Alleged Money Laundering

5. Problem is that older journalists knew but allowed corpmedia to distort and obscure
Kerry's credentials on this. I was told by a Boston Globe reporter two years ago that his paper actually discouraged reporting on BCCI specific stories.

He was appalled as he believed it was important to the entire story of terrorism and national leadership post 9-11, but the paper wouldn't go there. They gave it a minimal mention in their overall Kerry bio.

Remember, ALOT of powerful people lost alot of money when that bank closed and alot of its dealmakers were partially exposed.

No wonder so many powerful players did NOT want Kerry to get into the oval office. They knew he would open the books.

7. Amazing - the only guy who did the right thing on BCCI
not only paid a price then, but still does. He is the only person in DC that I trust at this point.

8. We need to grow the anti-corruption, open government wing of the party.
There are some others in DC now, like Waxman, Waters and Conyers, but we definitely need to add to those numbers in congress and senate.

9. There are suggestions that Valerie Plame was outed because of BCCI.
Her operation in Europe was gathering information that potentially linked to BCCI, I've read, which is why she had to be shut down.

10. That's why I see BAE as the continuing saga that is BCCI and its root missions

for the extended BFEE and their global partners. And also why I believe Wilson and other CIA were behind Kerry in 2003-4.

The only way any of them can say anything publicly in this media atmosphere is to have the hidden documentation IN HAND, since media will NOT take anyone from the Dem sides' word for anything the last 10 years - and the only president who would be CERTAIN to facilitate that would have been Kerry.

And THAT is why BushInc had to steal 2004. And THAT is why some powerful Dems helped by undermining Kerry from within.

11. What can we do to get this out in the open more?
This is one of the main things that Cheney does - protect these business interests in bed with global organized crime. The Saudis are in this up to their eyeballs.

12. What more can we do but keep focused on it till greater # of activists finally wake up.
The political horseracers think they're doing their country a favor by getting behind a Democrat and pushing their candidacy, completely mindless about whether or not that candidate will open the books on BushInc and expose these fascists and their agenda for this world.

You can get penalized at some places for asking something as simple as which candidate is most likely to hold BushInc accountable when they take office. Trust me, it happens.

3. Very glad to hear Kerry is on this. He is the pre-eminent expert
on these sorts of things, and I hope he follows up, if Justice starts dragging their feet.

6. He has a leg up on this story because he knows the characters involved and their
standard operating procedures. Guess he's been thumbing through all the BCCI files he kept.

13. What a shame more Democrats aren't picking up on this and what it actually means.
Many claim to be concerned about the road to fascism but look away when presented with part of the fascists' blueprints.
