1. I say there is not enough general debate. I once read that it is not a good idea
to just ignore irrational beliefs because of the harm that irrational beliefs can do to people and countries. I say we challange the christian beleif. It's fine to believe what you want as long as it is based on fact and reality. Jesus was not born of a virgin. Lets start there and see where we go.

4. I would say that it is fine to beleive what you want...
as long as you don't try to force it on others.

The United States was formed to be governed by Secular institutions and laws. Let's try to regain that, and leave the basis for belief of something as a right inherent to the individual. Whether somebody believes something based on an irrational set of assumptions is no real concern of yours, as long as they aren't able to foist those beliefs on you (or influence laws or institutions which you are required to observe.)

2. Christianity is an institution that carries much influence in 'Murka. It should be discussed.
In the same way that branches of government are, the corporations are, race is, women's rights are, etc.

3. It should be talked about as those other things are
When it interacts with society as a whole. For example in the Creationism/Abortion/Gay Marriage debates, the religiousity of those we disagree is well worth discussing.

On the other hand discussing something that is internal to religion, like theology, belongs in the religion forum. Posts making fun of rapture believers, for example, don't really have anything to do with society as a whole, and as such should be dropped. By the same token this forum wouldn't discuss Italian Cookery, or Rap Music on the grounds that Ethnicity and Race are still major issues in America - such discussions would go to other forums.

Or that's my take at any rate.

10. "Sacred cows make the best hamburger." Mark Twain
Chistianity's influence on society is pervasive. As a philosophy, it is akin to Marxism, Liberalism, Conservatism, Capitalism, etc. Leaving the effects of any of those other philosophies out of the discussion, i.e. some liberals advocating gun-control (which I do, though I don't consider myself a liberal), calls into question the basic tenets of the philosophy. Christians who believe in the rapture, or talking snakes, (though most don't - I think) leave open the question of the validity of the philosophy as a whole.

"Shake off all the fears of servile prejudices, under which weak minds are servilely crouched. Fix reason firmly in her seat, and call on her tribunal for every fact, every opinion. Question with boldness even the existence of a God; because, if there be one, he must more approve of the homage of reason than that of blindfolded fear." - Thomas Jefferson, letter to Peter Carr, Aug. 10, 1787

15. So in order to have a well ordered conversation on the subject
Why not leave the discussion of the effects of Christianity on Society in GD and the belief system of Christianity in the Religion Forum?

Is your goal specifically to wean DU Christians away from their belief system?

17. I've given up on "goals" long ago.
I see no reason that those to object to the myriad discussions of Christianity in all it's aspects can't simply ignore them. Much as I avoid all the myriad discussion of the doings of celebrities. Which, it could be argued, tough on the deeper subject of the state of American Culture/Society.

As for "goals", I've reached a comfortable enough state of humility (and age) that I've cast aside the notion that I'm here (on earth) to "accomplish" much of anything other than keep breathing for a while. Oh, and do whatever "she who must be obeyed" designates as absolutely essential to my well-being - such as taking out the trash.

11. I don't really get bothered by any specific thread topic, just the number of identical threads.
It's a hassle to have to ignore thirty threads about the same shit every time I log on. For fuck's sake, people, how many Paris Coulter/persecuted-feeling (Christians/Democrats/wrestling fans)/corporate media headline threads about the same thing do we really need? Does anyone bother to check if there's already a thread started about what they post before they do?

Oh well, I'm just bitching about it. I don't expect anyone to be considerate. I'll just continue to ignore threads.

16. I think that Skinner should create a best of thread re "anti-christian"/"christian bashing"
I see this same tired theory/talking point, or what ever it is about once a week (or so it seems to me).

I wish that Skinner would create a "best of" thread, with the best responses (on both sides)to the question/debate about the percieved christian bashing. Then it should be tacked at the top of GD so we don't have to rehash this to death.

18. It'd be nice if the
ones DOING the bashing could similarly restrict themselves to one thread. Or, hell, how about just keeping it out of GD?

19. "bashing" is against the rules
You should hit "alert" if you believe that someone is "bashing" you.
