Mitt Romney takes family vacation, ties dog to top of the car.
I was thinking maybe this blog from his kids might not be a good idea but it is proving to be pretty entertaining.

Apparently the dog, after four hours on top of the car, lost control of its bowels so Mitt pulled over to hose down the car and the dog which his son describes as "emotion-free crisis management." (like that's a GOOD thing)

In-freaking-deed.

http://time-blog.com/swampland/2007/06/romneys_shaggy_dog_story.html

What is also worrying is that Mr. Romney seems to hold the very old fashioned idea that he needs to actively show he is heartless, hence the hunting claims he has made. Not subsistence hunting, but pride in killing defenseless animals for sport, for fun, for show.

In the case of the dog on the roof of the car, if this is true, quite remarkably it obviously wasn't for show as only his own children were watching, a lesson in cruelty that was also wrong for them to witness. There was also the obviousness of the situation. Thinking of the wind, the weather, the speed, the vulnerability, the isolation on the roof, it is commonsense that any dog who’s under extreme stress might show that stress by losing control of his bowels: that alone should have been sufficient indication that the dog was, basically, being tortured.

If you wouldn’t strap your child to the roof of your car, you have no business doing that to the family dog! I don't know who would find that acceptable.

99. This story will sink any chances of Mitt Romney getting the nomination much less the presidency.
Edited on Thu Jun-28-07 03:03 AM by liberaldemocrat7
Noone should put a dog on a top of a vehicle roof for 12 hours. A dog belongs inside the vehicle and not in a carrier. You only put a pet in a carrier when you plan to transport the pet by air.

Pet lovers should spread this story from sea to shining sea. I don't care if it happened more than 15 years ago. Mitt should have treated his dog more humanely. I find this extremely neglectful.

This story will dog Romney until he drops out.

Drop out now Willard Romney.

86. Here's the link from Time
Romney's Cruel Canine Vacation

The reporter intended the anecdote that opened part four of the Boston Globe's profile of Mitt Romney to illustrate, as the story said, "emotion-free crisis management": Father deals with minor — but gross — incident during a 1983 family vacation, and saves the day. But the details of the event are more than unseemly — they may, in fact, be illegal.

The incident: dog excrement found on the roof and windows of the Romney station wagon. How it got there: Romney strapped a dog carrier — with the family dog Seamus, an Irish Setter, in it — to the roof of the family station wagon for a twelve hour drive from Boston to Ontario, which the family apparently completed, despite Seamus's rather visceral protest.

35. No, what I'm saying is that he didn't want to stop
so he didn't want the dog inside the car to remind him (by whining or pissing and shitting all over everybody) that it really might be a good idea to stop for a potty break...for everybody. He probably figured the dog could do its business in the crate and he wouldn't have to see it or smell it until they got where they're going.

If he was going to walk the dog, the crate probably would have been on top of the car...empty.

This really upsets me. We travel with 2 large dogs and plan our routes with rest stops and walks in mind. You just don't expect an animal to be able to work on the same schedule as an adult human. In fact, he was abusing the kids by letting them know he wasn't going to stop to let them go, either.

"Seriously--how could you strap your dog to the roof of your car? Honestly? This is just plain weird, and not "effective crisis management"."

It's called Republican crisis management.
First, you create a crisis ("who could have foreseen that a dog kept in a carrier on the roof of a car for hours on end would take a dump?").
Then you "manage" it by doin' a heckuva job hosin' off that roof.

37. loved this one:
Only liberal weenies worry about strapping dogs to the roofs of cars. Conservatives (i.e. real Americans) understand that such enhanced canine transportation methods are vital tools in the global war against the varmofascists. Besides, as ex-governor of Massachusetts (a.k.a. the Communist Republic of Harvard) Mitt isn't actually part of the executive branch, and therefore isn't subject to the state's laws against animal so-called cruelty.

I mean ask youself: Would Jack Bauer strap a dog to a car to save Boston from nuclear annihilation? Well, no, not as long as that gay marriage law stays on the books. But still, Mitt's clearly on the side of the angels here, even if he is a follower of the Morman Anti-Christ.

59. here is a precious response
"I cannot vote for a Mormon, but, regarding this story, I find no fault with the man. Have you never seen a dog joyfully ride in the back of a pickup truck, or sticking its head out of a car window to catch the breeze? Putting the dog on top of the car saved the inside of the car from getting the greeting card the dog was going to deliver. It is a DOG for Christ's sake! Here in China we put 'em in a wok. This is about the most stupid "issue" I have ever seen raised during an election, and it looks like the mob is eating it up AGAIN!"

viewing how he/she treats helpless and/or domestic animals.

I don't care if you choose to WOK your dog in China, one thoughtful thing about the good old USA is that we "at least in theory" do NOT condone cruelty to animals.

Sorry but this is so Un-Sat it makes me wish ole' Mitt could ride on a wing of a small prop plane to get "the feeling" that poor dog felt by his dumb ass cruelty, i.e., unbridled terror. :grr:

73. I'm sure YOU know this but thousands of doggies have been killed and injured
from being allowed to do those things. It is easy for a dog to lose an eye from getting hit by an insect in the wind and they will often jump from a truck for many reasons...seeing a cat, etc. I almost lost one of mine when I stupidly let him ride in the back of my pickup, it had a camper top and I left up the window never dreaming he would ever hop out but he did right on a busy highway. LUCKILY I noticed instantly and managed to stop and get him out of the traffic.

78. and I will never get out of my mind
the sight of a dog, whose owners had put it in their truck carrying a horse trailer- who being hung by his leash, as he hung off the side of the truck. As to whether he jumped or fell, I don't know, but he was in bad shape.

I turned around to alert them, but by that time they had figured out that there was a problem. I saw them put the dog in the cab- and amazingly enough, he was alive. I hope that he didn't have any permanent damage.

I’ve tied dogs in the back of my truck before. Just enough chain for them to take a step or two but not enough to try to jump out.

The dog probably had a great time. Have you ever seen the look of pure joy on the face of a dog riding in a car with its head sticking out the window, with the wind rushing over its face? Dogs LOVE this. They could have boarded him in some cramped kennel instead of taking him along to romp outdoors with the family on vacation, and then nobody would be whining about it, but I’m sure the dog was happier being taken along.

My lab rides in the back of a flat bed pickup. She loves it. No crate either. If I don’t tie her to the rack, she jumps out at red lights and runs around, then jumps back in when I start rolling.

82. This has got to be an onion piece.
Please tell me this is an onion piece.

Dogs DO love to ride with their face to the wind, for short bursts, and then they bring their heads back into shelter to breathe and re-group.

To be forced to endure the kind of wind velocity driven off the hood of a car onto the roof, for any length of time, without respite, is inhumane!! That dog must have been out of his fucking mind with fear and anxiety!!!

Dem or Rethug would lose my vote instantly for doing such a despicable deed with an animal as tying their crate to the roof of a moving vehicle.

What normal human being would do something so sadistic and cruel to an innocent animal?

105. People also cruelly put their dogs in plane cargo holds
In a cargo hold, pets can be subjected to temperature extremes which may include excessive heat or freezing. Pets have been known to die in the intense heat of the closed hold while planes wait to taxi down the runway. In a cargo hold with imperfect climate control, the hold can also reaching freezing temperatures very quickly once the aircraft is in flight, which could be fatal. It is also possible for the cargo hold to lose pressure, and some cargo holds have imperfect air circulation systems, meaning that your animal has a chance of suffocating from lack of oxygen.

Strapping a carrier to the roof of the car on in a plane cargo hold is unacceptable, imo.
