Is the US currently running CIA type operations in Iran?
While watching NBC news tonight there was a report about refinery issues which are causing huge gas shortages at the pump in Iran. There have been protests and some violence. People were chanting death to their president.

I remember reading an article some time ago, and for the life of me I can't find it, about the US running CIA type operations to destabilize the government.

Anyone think the two are connected?

Wasn't it Seymour Hersh who wrote about it a while ago?

http://www.newyorker.com/archive/2005/01/24/050124fa_fact?currentPage=1

http://www.democracynow.org/article.pl?sid=05/01/18/1447252

From Jan 2005

"Investigative journalist Seymour Hersh is reporting in The New Yorker magazine that the Pentagon has already secretly sent in forces to Iran to identify possible future military targets. Hersh wrote that he had been repeatedly told by intelligence and military officials, on condition of anonymity that "the next strategic target was Iran."

How Bush will redirection the failure in Iraq to a confrontation with Iran, but that article is not specific about covert operations as the Jan 2005 piece.

5. Remember right after the invasion
the US disbanded the Baath party and Saddam's Mukhabarat? That was almost true. The Mukhabarat had a special Iran Destabilization branch that the CIA was keen to preserve. It was one of the first open indications that Iraq wasn't the final stop on Dubya's mideast hellfire tour.

9. Also "Iran oil exports at risk in UK ship sanctions plan"
http://www.reuters.com/article/topNews/idUSL26967420070626?feedType=RSS

"A British proposal to target Iran's national shipping lines under a draft U.N. sanctions resolution could temporarily curb Tehran's ability to export oil to world markets, maritime sources said on Tuesday.

The confidential draft, obtained by Reuters on Friday, suggests denying rights of passage to Iranian merchant ships in foreign waters. The withdrawal of landing rights for Iranian aircraft is also suggested."

Iran fuel rations spark anger, rioting
At least two pump stations torched; motorists line up for gas for hours

"Angry Iranian motorists lined up for gasoline for hours on Wednesday after the world’s fourth-largest oil exporter imposed fuel rationing, sparking chaotic scenes and the torching of at least two pump stations.

One Iranian news agency, Fars, said 12 gasoline stations were set ablaze in Tehran after the government’s announcement late on Tuesday, but only two could be independently confirmed...

Despite its huge energy reserves, Iran lacks refining capacity and must import about 40 percent of its gasoline, a sensitive issue when world powers have threatened new U.N. sanctions in a row with Tehran over its nuclear program."

10. Absolutely, Wes Clark referred to this very thing
in a radio interview yesterday. He stated that we now have troops on three of Iran's borders and are in position to control it's air space. He also said congress has authorized the funds for covert operations inside Iran to foment revolution. It's an open secret and street riots and arson are just the type of thing they would do. Anything to cause unrest and resentment of the Govt.

12. And an "R" for this important topic while the focus has been on
the Coulter/Edwards exchange :(

A few well placed unconfirmed reports and proposed sanctions against their shipping lines might be all we need to get the ball rolling.

Iranian forces crossed Iraqi border: report

"Iranian Revolutionary Guard forces have been spotted by British troops crossing the border into southern Iraq, The Sun tabloid reported on Tuesday.

Britain's defence ministry would not confirm or deny the report, with a spokesman declining to comment on "intelligence matters".

An unidentified intelligence source told the tabloid: "It is an extremely alarming development and raises the stakes considerably. In effect, it means we are in a full on war with Iran -- but nobody has officially declared it."

Mind you, I don't disagree. I'm just wondering if I'm reading between the lines of your post corectly.
Am I?

21. Not sure what you're suggesting, but...
The main idea was not to read too much into reports of people chanting for ol' AJ's head. People over there have more than enough reason to hate his guts without us inciting anything, and it's not like overexaggerated threats of death and destruction aren't kind of standard fare for their political discourse.

18. Ever heard of DB/Anabasis authorized by Bush on February 16, 2002?
DB/Anabasis was the code name for an extensive covert operations plan that had been drawn up by the CIA to destabilize and ultimately topple the regime of Saddam Hussein. (DB was the agency cryptonym for Iraq.) At the direction of the White House, Tenet had commissioned the scheme, not too long after the U.S. military had defeated the Taliban. About this time, Bush asked Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld to order up a fresh war plan for Iraq. It was clear to top intelligence officials that Iraq was next on Bush's agenda, and the task of developing the CIA's secret plan was handed to two seasoned officers in the Iraq Operations Group within the agency's Directorate of Operations, or DO.
