She didn't call people gay
We are now seeing the new defense of Coulter. "What is wrong with calling people gay?". It is, admittedly a brilliant defense. After all, it flips the bigot label back on us. But she didn't call people gay. She called people fag and faggot.

I know what it is like to be called faggot to your face over and over again to the point that you honestly think it is your name. I know what it is like wondering what the person calling you that might do next. Trust me, I know the difference between someone calling me gay and someone calling me faggot.

People like Tucker Carlson know this. They aren't stupid. They are liars who hope enough people will believe their lies that they can rehabilite Coulter. Somehow I think Tucker at one time knew what it was like to be called faggot to his face. Too bad he evidently forgot that.

How can anyone defend her?

This is pukeworthy.

3. They can't hide her so they try to spin the situation
Could you imagine if Tucker asked "why is it wrong to call people black?" after some nut publicly calls another public figure the n word? Ridiculous.

9. exactly!
I hope somebody in the MSM comes right back at her with that one.

The "why is it wrong to call people gay" defense also has all the nuances that Matsubara pointed out below--it would be sweet if the smackdown we hope for includes those, too.

4. Let's change the meaning of the word - Saul Alinsky style
From now on faggot means sissy or asshole or fuckhead.

Now it doesn't describe most gay guys I know.

But it does describe Tucker and Coulter nicely.

5. butter wouldn't melt in that mouth
It would instantly turn into ashes.

Of course there's something wrong with calling people gay when "gay" is used as an insult. When kids say "that's so gay" they don't mean "that's so cool"--they're being critical. Frankly, if they did mean it as a compliment I don't think I'd be discouraging the teenagers in my life from saying it. It's pretty clear she doesn't mean it as a compliment or even as a simple statement of fact.

(I hate the way they've forced people into having to respond to that ridiculous, illogical argument by saying "there's nothing wrong with being gay." Is there anything wrong with eating peanut butter? The statement "there's nothing wrong with eating peanut butter" implies that there's a tenable opposing point of view. I don't like even having to dignify their attempts to make us look bigoted by saying "of course there's nothing wrong with..." when all along it's been her poisonous attitude that's disgusting, not the statement itself.)

7. No, she used slurs. And good people know that.
Those who "defend" her know that. I'll bet they have to use Scope after the show.

8. I don't think it's a brilliant defense.
First of all "fag" and "faggot" are offensive enough in their own right.

But what if she had said "Edwards is gay."

It would have been just as bad, if not worse because of all that she's trying to imply.

She's trying to imply that Edwards is less of a man, for being gay-like. BULLSHIT.

By extension, she's implying that gay men are not real men - also BULLSHIT.

And she's implying that being "manly" is somehow better than being feminine - BULLSHIT.

No matter how she phrases it, her comments are disgusting and insulting to people of all genders and orientations who actually live according to their consciences, rather than trying to fit some gender-role cookie-cutter.

That someone who is regularly called a "tranny" because of her less than feminine looks and voice, you would think she would have developed some empathy. Jeez, her best friend Matt is gay and cruises South Beach nightly, but that doesn't stop either of them from dumping loads of shit on LGBT people every chance they get.
