Ex military commanders warn against Iran attack

Reuters
Saturday, February 3, 2007; 7:38 PM

LONDON (Reuters) - Three former senior U.S. military officials warn that any military
action against Iran would have "disastrous consequences" and urged Washington to hold
immediate and unconditional talks with Tehran.

-snip-

In a letter to London's Sunday Times newspaper, the three former U.S. military leaders
said attacking Iran "would have disastrous consequences for security in the region,
coalition forces in Iraq and would further exacerbate regional and global tensions,"
they wrote.

"The current crisis must be resolved through diplomacy," they said.

The letter was signed by retired army Lieutenant General Robert Gard, a former military
assistant to Defense Secretary Robert McNamara, retired U.S. Marine Corps General Joseph
Hoar, a former commander in chief of U.S. Central Command; and retired Navy Vice Admiral
Jack Shanahan, a former director of the Center for Defense Information.

"There is time available to talk, we must ensure that we use it," they said.

Diplomacy can still win Iran

AS FORMER US military leaders, we strongly caution against the use of military force
against Iran. An attack on Iran would have disastrous consequences for security in
the region, coalition forces in Iraq and would further exacerbate regional and global
tensions. The current crisis must be resolved through diplomacy.

A strategy of diplomatic engagement with Iran would serve the interests of the US and
the UK and potentially could enhance regional and international security. The British
government has a vital role to play in securing a renewed diplomatic push and making
it clear that it will oppose any recourse to military force. The Bush administration
should engage immediately in direct talks with the government of Iran without
preconditions. There is time available to talk, we must ensure that we use it.

Vice Admiral Jack Shanahan

Chairman, Military Advisory Committee

4. Diplomacy? What diplomacy?
Edited on Sun Feb-04-07 12:19 AM by teryang
Since when are embargoes, sanctions, and military threats regarded as diplomacy?

If I was a nation of seventy million with a vast territory, ancient culture, substantial natural resources, and nuclear armed allies like China and Russia, I would not cede an inch to coercion.

What this administration calls diplomacy reminds one of Cortes dealings with the Aztecs, or white folks dealing with native Americans. There are scores of examples but the prelude to the Iraq war is an example which even Americans haven't forgotten yet.

It's safe to infer that any sign of weakness on Iran's part will only result in further intractable US demands. Iran needs to look east and ignore the west. Then the US military "surge" will fade of its own accord or "go for broke." A good portion of US elites appear to honestly have no stomach for the consequences and for good reasons.

6. Yes, this movie has played before and it doesn't end well.
If Bushco can ignore the Joint Chiefs of Staff about the Iraqi troop escalation, I hardly think retired military commanders will get too far.

I am an optimist, so I hope that this time the MSM and the public at large are aware of the danger that Bushco is courting with an attack on Iran.

7. I never thought Edwards to be an f-wit before his war mongering statements on Iran.
Has he explained these comments yet?
