Republicans are making death threats against their senators who support the immigration bill!!
Just heard this on MSNBC. Several Republican senators have reported that they have received death threats from republican constituents who are opposed to the immigration bill. The two senators from Georgia changed their votes because they were booed by crowds in Georgia.

Death threats!!!

Is this evidence of the destruction of the republican party?

The reporter on MSNBC said the senate is reporting they have never seen any bill create this much controversy. The phone lines to the senate are jammed.

But this immigration bill really does have the conservative base riled up.

Unfortunately, it will not be because of something important like Dick Cheney claiming to be a fourth branch of government, it will be over xenophobic hatred*.

*I'm not saying that we should have open borders or anything like that, I don't like this law either, but I am saying they don't like it because they hate the people coming into this country for their skin color and language.

20. The MSNBC reporter said the senators said the threats against them were
racist. I have always favored immigration reform and the racism from many opponents sickens me. I realize not everyone opposed to this bill is a racist. But there is a lot of racism in the anti camp, unfortunately.

10. Did they happen to mention whether those were reported to the FBI???
Don't doubt that they received such threats but I doubt their 'sincerity' that the death threats were the reason for changing their votes.

Let's see, Georgia...that would be Chambliss and Isakson.

16. "This is the business we have chosen"
When the Republicans have chosen to side with and make common cause with people who believe that violence will solve any problem, cut any Gordian knot, and settle any controversy, should Republican office-holders be surprised when their erstwhile allies use the same tactics against them? I'm sure that Saxby Chambliss is wetting himself at the prospect of being blown to bits when starting his car. Did they think the beast they've nurtured for so many years would tamely sit beside their imperial thrones forever, never increasing its appetite?

In my lifetime, I've watched these people murder a couple of Kennedys, Dr. King, and hundreds of others who cross them and question their unwavering faith in redemptive violence. And the politicians who support them have been inoculated from their blind hatred and seething rage. Until now. I'm mightily tempted to just draw the curtain across the stage as the lions finally settle scores with the abusive lion tamers.

18. What do they expect?
"The reporter on MSNBC said the senate is reporting they have never seen any bill create this much controversy. The phone lines to the senate are jammed."
They throw together a bill w/o really studying the effects both negative and positive, most of them haven't had time to read and understand the bill, it has more flaws than a car made in China, will likely increase the illegal immigration situation many times over without really solving much of anything.

...not at all. That said, it's about friggin' time the Republics had to deal with their crazed constituents -- monsters that they helped to create all along. Funny how we never -- NEVER -- heard a single one of them speak out when right wing crazies made death threats against Democrats and liberals and Hillary and Bill and ... you know what I'm talkin' about. So frankly, I'm not inclined to say anything other than, "What goes around, comes around, suckers."

51. Okay, fair enough...
...I don't remember a senator announcing threats on the floor either, but none of this should be surprising. Regardless of your position on the bill or mine (I was overwhelmingly against it), the majority of the country was against it and the Senate seemed utterly unresponsive.

Remember when the Senate passed a previous (and equally unpopular) version of the bill (this was before we took the Senate back, sometime before November of 2006), and Bill Frist called it "the best of the Senate" and "the will of the Senate?" According to a guy I know whose wife worked for Frist back then, Frist got dozens of threats for that - but he didn't make it public. This really isn't anything new, it just isn't reported very often.
