MSNBC host slams Bill O'Reilly for blaming dead mothers
RAW STORY

MSNBC's Dan Abrams reported Wednesday on Fox News' Bill O'Reilly's comments on the murder-suicide of pro wrestler Chris Benoit.

O'Reilly had blamed Benoit's wife, as well as another recently-murdered woman, for their own deaths, saying, "In both of these terrible situations, the men involved were troubled and chaotic, and the women involved had to know that. ... Those ladies made big mistakes. They were obligated to protect their children ... They did not protect them."

"This is an absolute outrage," said Abrams, calling O'Reilly's statements "an insult to their families and all victims of violent crime."

MSNBC's legal analyst Susan Filan added, "This is sick! Men are flocking to the defense of men who kill women. ... It is a culture of enabling."

20. I wish.
It's disgusting that even Faux is willing to keep him on the air, or that anybody still wants to watch him.

8. O'Reilly's sponsors consider controversy a plus, not a minus.
Every time him, Hannity or Rush spew crap like this their ratings go way up. The way we get rid of these scumbags is to stop tuning in to find out what disgusting thing they said today.

I am sitting here open-mouthed in disbelief and disgust.

O'Reilly should be fired for this.

19. Apparently not. Apparently fathers can be expected to kill their children
unless the mothers "do their jobs" and protect them, in the gospel according to O'Reilly.

It's outrageous on every level. Every single human being in the world should be outraged.

28. Sometimes I wonder...
Seems to be a fair contingent of people here on DU that earnestly believe that men are by nature violent murderous baby-eating thugs or something.

of COURSE it is the father's responsibility to protect their kids. Falafel-fondler just finds it hard to pin too much blame on a dude who kills women and kids - After all, he heartily supports Boosh.

29. Really? I haven't noticed any such posts. When you see them, hit "alert."
Any post stating that "men are by nature violent murderous baby-eating thugs" would be a clear violation of DU rules. As a former mod, I know that any such post would be deleted as soon as it came to the attention of the mods. Do hit "alert" when you see any such post.

31. He's referring to posts that pertain to the fact that men are
the perpetrators of vast amounts of violence against women --- domestic violence, homicide, stalking, rape. (Men are also overwhelmingly the perpetrators of violence against other men.) While women may perform some violence, they do NOT do them at anything near the rate that men do.

I can't imagine those kinds of posts, esp. with DoJ links, etc., (and need it be said? without the hyperbole about baby-eating, etc.) would be deleted. But I'm glad to hear the ridiculous strawmen and red herring revisionism by men who want to manipulate the facts for their own purposes may indeed be deletable.

32. Oh! The poster was referring to references to the FACTS about violence.
What a pity it is that we do discuss facts here on DU, even when those facts might make some feel uncomfortable.

34. right
uncomfortable and downright defensive -- as if that will either change the facts, change our understanding of the facts or maybe just distract us from those pesky facts.

It never works, either. But they just don't learn.

7. Ever notice how much "news" is about the reporting?
Seems like 90% of what the cable media reports is on itself. Tweety's entire show yesterday was dedicated to reporting on the media reaction to the show he had previously. Abrams' spent the better part of his show talking about media reaction to other media reporting. Olbermann is great but he spends about half the hour talking about media hype.

I've gotten back to watching Brian Williams (nbc) now and again, cruise the web and catch the first half hour of Olbermann and sometimes Daily Show if I have the time. I'd love to be able to turn to cable news for indepth about the stories but they dont' bother to do that, so I turn to the web instead.

Especially the little grudge matches between MSNBC and Fox. I don't watch Fox and I really don't want to watch them second-hand through constant coverage on Keith etc. Like you, I turn to the web or print.

11. "They were obligated to protect their children"
Yes Barf-O, only the mothers were obligated. No obligation on the part of the fathers at all, right?

You know folks, for all the nit-picking about syntax that goes on around here, I would like to ask people to remember, just for a short moment, that Bill-O is not some unknown crackpot (ok, well, crackpot yes, unknown, no). There are, I don't know, thousands(?) of people in this country who listen to him and agree with what he says and believe it too.

You want to discuss the semantics of domestic violence and who's damaged by it, fine. But let's make sure we understand that a large portion of the country THINKS LIKE BILL that women are responsible for the damage the men in their lives do to them.

When women here on these boards ask for YOUR help in changing the dynamic of the debate, THIS is why we ask. We are not asking for help based on paranoia and some far-off nightmare scenario. We are asking because today, right now, in America, women are dying at the hands of their intimate partners and people all over the country, just like Bill-O, just think she got what she deserved. Perhaps it's easier to dismiss a woman's life than it is to confront the violence of the men who do the killing.

(And just because I want my point to be heard and not co-opted, please note that I said "the men who do the killing" not "men".)

12. O’Reilly is creepy and disgusting. How can a mother protect …
the children if she can’t even protect herself? If the man or situation is that out of control, he is threatening her and the children and she doesn’t feel there is anywhere to turn, that no one will understand or be able to shelter her, that she is doomed.

The truly frightening terrorists are in our own homes.

15. Bill is the ultimate right wing regressive male with a mommy problem
He blames his mommy for some past injustice. It's NEVER daddy's problem, it's always mommy who was wrong.
BillO is an emotional five year old, like the vast majority of political people of his ilk.

It's her fault that she was murdered first, according to O'Reilly. He should be fired immediately.

Apparently discouraging those in need of psychological counselling is a Fox cost-saving policy. Privatize profits, socialize risks.
