Harsh cold expected to linger in Midwest

By PATRICK CONDON, Associated Press Writer 2 hours, 38 minutes ago

MINNEAPOLIS - Despite the bitter cold gripping the Midwest, Mike Thamm of Duluth prepared to walk outside clad only in a swimsuit and dive into frigid water for charity.
.........

Temperatures in Minneapolis and St. Paul were expected to stay below freezing until sometime Tuesday, said
National Weather Service meteorologist Karen Trammel. The sub-freezing temperatures could linger even longer in northern Minnesota, she said. Harsh winter weather conditions brought whiteout conditions that were blamed for traffic pileups in Michigan and Ohio.

............
St. Paul Mayor Chris Coleman intervened when officials moved to cancel Saturday night's Winter Carnival parade. But it was to be a smaller version, covering just three blocks in downtown St. Paul.

Blizzard warnings were in effect for parts of Michigan, and temperatures reached as low as 17 below zero in the Upper Peninsula. Winds gusting to 40 mph threatened to drive wind chill readings to as low as 30 degrees below zero, the National Weather Service said.

4. Great weather for Badger State Games
at least curling is inside. I have to be back at the barn at 11 - I'd almost rather stay home.

Last night when I left the barn my car didn't seem too happy with the cold - but then neither was I.

7. It's 3 degrees in Western New York....
and a bright sun shiny day. We had some snow in my area yesterday but not much. It does look beautiful outside with the new snow but I hope this frigid cold spell is over soon. I don't want to see my heating bill for this month.

9. In other words, the temperatures are exactly as they should be for this
time of year.

Remember when we would start getting freezing weather around Thanksgiving and it would last through March? We'd have a number of snow storms that dropped at least five or six inches of snow on the ground.

The last three or four, only four or five weeks of cold and very little snow. It's been so weird and different. I've been involved in a lot of conversations about how damn different it has been. It's scarey.

10. What's happening is
winter is coming later, and moving into spring. I hope the birds, trees, and flowers can eventually adjust. At this time in Iowa, we used to be moving into the "chilly rain" period with major temperature fluctuations, and the occasional freak, wet snow dump in early April.
