Reid threatens to call off August recess
By Manu Raju
June 29, 2007

Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) Friday threatened to scrap the Senate’s August recess until senators resolve disputes holding up conference negotiations over two bills central to the Democratic agenda.

The bills, which would implement the recommendations made by the bipartisan 9/11 Commission and overhaul lobbying and ethics rules, have been stalled by Senate Republicans, who have demanded assurances over the final contents of the legislation.

The measures were cornerstones of the Democratic 2006 campaign platform, and Reid said lawmakers would clear the measures even if it meant working on Capitol Hill for Congress’s annual August recess.

“If it means our recess is going to go away, we’re going to complete those two pieces of legislation,” Reid said at a Friday morning news conference.

Reid and Republican leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) appeared close Thursday to naming Senate conferees to the ethics and lobbying overhaul bill, but Sen. Jim DeMint (R-S.C.) objected, demanding that stringent earmark disclosure rules would remain in the final bill.

5. Not to mention the effect recesses have on subpoenas
Legal questions have arisen as to the importance of the investigation if not done during sessions when legislators are making laws.

Cancel the recess and do your jobs, protect and defend our constitution.

10. Yep.
Although I don't have a particular problem with Congress taking it's recesses - I do have trouble with how this Administration has abused it's authority during the breaks. Yessireee, Democrats hate families...making republican stay in D.C. and work

Then AND now! Now that he's the lamest of ducks you know he's gonna be busy with recess appointments. Gawd help us!

for the reasons discussed already-keep on pressure, keep up hearings, keep up subpeanas, and keep Bush from making any more recess appointments.

18. The congress's ratings would finally come out of the toilet! People would LOVE this!
The rest of us work-horses have to work hard for our money, and it would raise the popularity of the (Dem) congress if they forced actual WORK on the whole body of legislators.

It's a good way to improve those ratings!!

26. Reid's threats are meaningless
and the GOP knows it.

Reid and Pelosi have given Bush & Cheney free reign to commit crimes without threat of prosecution for the rest of their term in office. The GOP knows Reid won't do anything to hurt them either.

They're just going through the motions, helping the GOP every step of the way.

24. Does anybody know why they wouldn't leave this one in?
but Sen. Jim DeMint (R-S.C.) objected, demanding that stringent earmark disclosure rules would remain in the final bill.

The objection sparked sharp exchanges on the Senate floor Thursday, with Reid saying that doing so would allow any senator to hijack legislation in order to get his or her favored provisions in final legislation. But DeMint said that Democrats were not committed to real reform of the congressional practice of earmarking funds to lawmakers’ constituencies.

====================================================================

We spend so much damn money building bridges to nowhere et al, I'd love to see this provision in the bill. Good funding decisions, earmarks or not should be done in the daylight and they should be accepted by all. It's the really shady appropriations that need to be taken off the table.

31. That is odd
unless Dems felt the GOP would try to use the earmark restrictions against them.

Sometimes GOP'ers use an overly broad definition of earmarks to slow something down that they don't want.

28. Just do it!
Don't talk about it. Don't threaten. Just do it.

There'll be plenty of time for 'recess', vacations, holiday celebrations, etc. after we have put this criminal administration out of work, and hopefully behind bars. Until then it's not "business as usual", and there is no good reason for 'traditional' schedules to be adhered to. We're in dire straits, and have already lost so much. Working overtime is not too much to expect.
