U.S. border fence protrudes into Mexico

By ALICIA A. CALDWELL, Associated Press Writer 43 minutes ago

COLUMBUS, N.M. - The 1.5-mile barrier along the U.S.-Mexico border was designed to keep cars from illegally crossing into the United States. There's just one problem: It was accidentally built on Mexican soil. Now embarrassed border officials say the mistake could cost the federal government more than $3 million to fix.

The barrier was part of more than 15 miles of border fence built in 2000, stretching from the town of Columbus to an onion farm and cattle ranch.

A U.S. Customs and Border Protection spokesman said the vertical metal tubes were sunk into the ground and filled with cement along what officials firmly believed was the border. But a routine aerial survey in March revealed that the barrier protrudes into Mexico by 1 to 6 feet.

What, is somebody going to stop them from dealing with obstructions within their own territorial boundaries?

3. This is when we find out how well written all of the contracts were.

Were there clauses for accuracy?

Were bonuses paid out for its completion?

Etc.

8. K&R #2. You ain't seen nothing yet. The boondoggle has yet to begin!!1
Everybody ought to be required to visit the SOUTHERN border, to see what WASTE is being spent!!1

Hiring thousands of border patrol, millions on construction of palatial buildings for the border patrol, dune buggys, drone planes, camera equipment of all (laser?) kind, horses, river boats, concrete concrete concret (pilings), computer equipment,

but here's the biggie: (Get ready for the catchword: ) BIO-METRIC documents. We Libs have historically been opposed to national I.D.(s), but GET READY because they're COMING!!1 And all you fellow codgers who get upset when somebody demands your SOCIAL SECURITY ACCOUNT NUMBER and you refuse to provide it, WE are going to HAVE to provide it, O.K.?!!1 (Like it's not already OUT THERE!!1)

17. A couple of weeks ago I had to walk across that border (Tiajuana);
it too us 1.5 hours, just to walk! It was organized, but something needs to be done. Maybe a few more agents put in the right place?

19. I am with you, but be careful. There are plenty of "border enforcement" types here
at DU. Lots of support for a high wall backed up with plenty of firepower. (I'm not one of them ;) )

Also lots of pro-national ID types to keep those illegal workers away from our jobs. Times they are a-changin'.

10. My guess is illegals built this POS. We are rapidly becoming
the stupidest country in the entire world. I really don't think we can afford to have ANY repugs in Wash DC; we'll go completely under before Bush gets out.

13. "Who built this POS that will cost $3 MILLION to fix?"
The work crew that erected the fence were most likely a mix of individuals whose political views are as diverse as any other random group of people. Similarly, the "officials" cited in the OP are most likely also a group of people whose political views are as diverse as any other random group of people.

It's a pretty poor reflection on the workers and/or whoever provided the site drawings that they got the boundary lines wrong and/or that they misinterpreted the site plan drawings, that's for sure. But, without evidence in support of the contentions made in other posts in this thread, I doubt that it is a question of left vs. right politics, and I doubt that it's a matter of illegal workers doing the work.

14. This is beyond stupid
Before building a fence where I live, the biggest knucklehead in the county would get the property line marked off by a reliable surveyor, then set the fence back a foot or so. And check it out, why is it going to cost the federal government one dime to fix? Wasn't there a contract that specified whoever built the fence should be responsible for something as basic as not putting it in Mexico?

15. $10 million for the Gadsden Purchase ... $3 million for the Bush Fubar.
Edited on Sat Jun-30-07 12:06 AM by TahitiNut
Let's see $10M for 29,640 mi² ($230 million in today's dollars) works out to about $7,760 per square mile for the Gadsden Purchase. We should get at LEAST 380 square miles for the $3 million instead of ... what? ... about 0.1 square mile? - that we give back??

Gotta love the "business acumen" of Cheney/Bush. :puke:
