With all this very cold weather, pay attention to safety.

Aside from dressing warmly and making certain you don't spend too much time out in dangerously low temperature, please check for safety around your house. My daughter just called this morning and told me that they had a long and scary night. They live in a ranch style home with an attached garage. Late last night she went out to the garage to retrieve something from storage and thought she smelled gas. She got her husband to check also and he confirmed it wasn't her imagination and that he could smell it also. They woke up the kids and bundled them and took them to a neighbors. They called the emergency number and the police and fire department came over along with the gas company. The house was checked and a gas leak at the point where the pipe from the gas meter comes into their house was discovered. There was a crack in that section of PVC pipe and the general opinion was that the crack had to do with the extended period of cold weather. Now I'm not an expert on gas meters or how it should be piped into homes, but I wanted to put this out there FYI.

Stay warm and be safe.

1. And if you are traveling
Make sure that there are ample emergency supplies in your vehicle. Blankets, some sort of sterno or hotplate which can be plugged into a lighter, water, and possibly canned foods of some type, preferably fruits. But to echo the op, be safe above all else! I work in this stuff and it is very dangerous to stay in it for more than about 10-15 minutes at a time.

2. Your daughter did the right thing....
we had the same thing happen once and they shut off the gas and started working on it immediately. I asked them to wait until morning and they said they couldn't so they dug up outside and walked in and out of the house all night. They changed our meter from being inside to outside at the same time. I'm sure they kept the neighbors up all night because it was so noisy. Did they do the same thing with your daughters house by starting immediately?

3. Yes, the gas company stayed there until repairs were made
and thoroghly checkd all other gas pipes in the house and on the property. My daughter said that she's certain the entire neighborhood was awake from all the racket but thought that neighbors would understand. She and her husband and kids were allowed back into their home at 5:00 a.m.--all tired and cold, but we're so glad they are safe.

5. check to be sure your dufus husband locked the doors
Last night the winds were blowing and I was just feeling lucky to have a furnace that was cranking out the heat. We had had the furnace repairman check a few days ago. After the check, my husband failed to shut the downstairs door properly. It opened during the night and the cats got out. I found them parading around the property in the a.m.

So he said he'd lock it and he did. He just didn't test to see that he'd really gotten it locked. So once again, the door was open. Grrrrr!!

I've had that happen before and my pipes froze. It was the most miserable experience of my life, bailing out all that water, throwing out things that had been in storage, having plumbers into replace pipes. And the $$$!!

I'd throw his ass out in the street but he's such a good cook. :)
