Gore searched twice during Wisconsin trip

By KATHERINE M. SKIBA
Journal Sentinel
Posted: June 14, 2002
Washington

"Midwest Express Airlines boasts the "best care in the air," but Air Force II it ain't.

Private citizen Al Gore learned that last week - not once but twice.

Traveling to Wisconsin, the former vice president was pulled aside for random security screening at Reagan National Airport before boarding the 7:15 p.m. flight to Milwaukee on Friday.

Passengers sharing Flight 406 were startled to hear Gore being told, "Sorry, sir, you have to go through extra screening," and to witness security personnel rifling through his briefcase and suitcase, a witness said.

"You're looking out and seeing Al Gore's unmentionables in his big, carry-on suitcase," said Mark Graul of Green Bay. "You could tell he was thinking, 'This is not happening to me.'

"He did not have a happy look on his face. Basically the whole plane boarded before they got through looking through his stuff.

"He patiently went through it and then took a seat in the front row with, I assume, an aide," Graul said..."

71. Sometimes a private flight is the most direct route, so uses LESS fuel.
Commercial flights don't go to an awful lot of cities, or you have to take off and land three or four times, and change planes, and waste time, fuel, and money.

You don't get out much, do you?

Private jets don't really bother me.

In this modern day world,it is practical and easier for scheduling.

His schedule is very complexed and the fuel that he uses is well worth it in order to bring his message to the World.

The fuel we need to talk about is GW's.

private some or not but if you saw An Inconvenient Truth then you would of seen him in a couple different airports lugging his own luggage. He may use both. Since he tries to live carbon neutral and buys offsets I still wouldn't call him a hypocrite over it.
I do know he hired a private plane to take supplies to New Orleans after Katrina.

22. He offsets his carbon use as described here:
snip

The Gores and all the employees of Generation lead a "carbon-neutral" lifestyle, reducing their energy consumption when possible and purchasing so-called offsets available on newly emerging carbon markets. Gore says he and Tipper regularly calculate their home and business energy use - including the carbon cost of his prodigious global travel. Then he purchases offsets equal to the amount of carbon emissions they generate. Last year, for example, Gore and Tipper atoned for their estimated 1 million miles in global air travel by giving money to an Indian solar electric company and a Bulgarian hydroelectric project.

Carbon offsets are still an imperfect tool, favored only by a few early adopters. (An Inconvenient Truth directs viewers to a personal carbon calculator posted at www.climatecrisis.net.) Gore acknowledges that the average US consumer isn't likely to join what is, for now, essentially a voluntary taxation system. "The real answer is going to come in the marketplace," he says. "When the capitalist market system starts working for us instead of at cross-purposes, then the economy will start pushing inexorably toward lower and lower levels of pollution and higher and higher levels of efficiency. The main thing that's needed is to get the information flows right, removing the distortions and paying attention to the incentives."

This is most of the way down this longish article:

30. not that i am totally agreeing with this idea...
but not all consumption is the same...

if he takes a private jet to a conference where the publicity generated causes a lot of benefit toward conserving world resources, what is the net gain / loss?

if he has more time during a private jet ride to plan a possible presidential run (for example...) who would begrudge him that ability-

nothing can be weighed in absolutes (why buying carbon credits is nonsense), it is all situational.

http://www.sourcewatch.org/index.php?title=Creative_Response_Concepts

Gotta try to get people off the message and talking about Gore & his jet.

Plant a story w/ Drudge or Michael Savage and get it repeated "just enough"
so it gets a life of it's own. i.e. "Gore invented the internet ..... Kerry & Swift Boats
...... Dan Rather is @ fault for the bush going AWOL story ..... and so on."

Trust me Hannity, Rush, and others will pushing this big time.

BTW CO 2 build up is a sum total game .... Gore's plane produces X amount of
CO 2 ...... but if the objectives which he is speaking and writing about are accomplished
then millions of more times of CO 2 will be sequestered or not produced @ all.

of the few contraptions we have to cross giant swaths of ocean, beside ships which of course expel pollution as well. His point is to raise awareness enough so the "free markets" can come up with alternative means to get around. What does this thread starter expect him to do? Ride a rickshaw across the seas?

This kind of guerrilla marketing only works on the dolts over at freerepublic.

44. I love these kind of stories for this reason
it shows the new depths the right has been reduced to since their incredible failures of the past few years. We have huge problems facing this country that require all of our efforts and brain power to resolve. And what are we hearing from the right these days? Hillary posed in front of green foliage -- which shouldn't have been green. Biden made a stupid statement. Obama attended an elementary school outside the United States that schooled him in terrorism -- which Hillary's campaign smeared him with. All untrue. John Edwards, the son of mill workers who is a self-made man, has built a large house.
Yes. The right has now become Paris Hilton -- all silliness all the time.
And Al Gore, a very busy man with an agenda that would make Bush's "working hard" look like a picnic, travels by jet.
Sheesh.

53. Secret Service?
In a roundabout way, this brings up one question I had while watching An Inconvenient Truth:

Where is Gore's Secret Service bodyguards?

I'm sure he still has to have them right? All x-prez's, their wives, etc have them. So how is it that you see him traveling thru airports regularly? Wouldn't that drive the bodyguards nuts?

59. They must have done a snow job on us in "An Inconvenient Truth", then.
There are scenes in the film where he's in airports...clearly getting onto commerical flights.

I think whatever you may have heard is sheer bunk.

68. I just called Al, niceypoo, and gave him holy hell for his hypocrisy.
Edited on Mon Feb-05-07 11:44 AM by Old Crusoe
Not only does he fly in airplanes, but he and Tipper have AN ELECTRIC CAN-OPENER on their kitchen counter.

I gave him hell for that, too.

He put Tipper on via speaker phone and I lashed them mercilessly with denunciations of their lifestyle and the pointless accoutrements they've acquired over the years.

They agreed to sell their vehicles and from this point forward will journey from place to place with two burros and a shitwagon.

Thank god you brought this outrage to our attention.

70. I find it funny how people get so offended by a simple question
and attack someone for asking it rather than just helping to answer it. Funny thing, human nature...

72. You might have stated it differently. It came off as a slam on a
Democratic candidate, a guy many of us feel rightfully should be living on Pennsylvania Avenue.

People here like their candidates. And/or they like Democrats. Put a filter between what another source says about a candidate or a Democrat so you aren't the bearer of the slam.

That's all I meant.

78. I'm cool with you, niceypoo, but a word to wise: go easy on our
Democrats, even if you MEANT to, and let's all suit up together to dump still more Republicans in 2008.

They have been the real bad guys these last several years and a lot of us out here are very determined to replace their sorry butts with Democrats, coast-to-coast.

All good wishes.
