Instead of focusing on hunting terrorists (our original mission), these troops are caught in the middle of a Sunni/Shia bloodbath.
By the way, with the recent calls by senior Iraqi leaders for the Iraqi population to “defend themselves,” when is our government going to start calling this a civil war?
The surge may also be a failure because troops in a lot of smaller outposts scattered throughout the cities are forced to spend their time defending their outposts, instead of patrolling the streets (I got that from a Stars and Stripes story).
Have we not learned anything from Vietnam?
