Bush considers gradual Iraq withdrawal - There he goes playing right into the terra-ists hands

George W Bush is considering a gradual withdrawal of troops from Iraq in order to prevent further desertions by members of the Republican party, it has been reported.

Officials and advisors to the US president are alarmed that political support for his war strategy among senators belonging to Mr Bush’s party is "collapsing around them", according to the New York Times.

The president and his aides had thought they could wait to begin discussions about any change in strategy until after Sept 15, when the US commander in Iraq, Gen David Petraeus, and US ambassador to Iraq, Ryan Crocker, are due to present a highly anticipated report on Iraq's security and political progress.

But Mr Bush's aides have acknowledged he may well be forced to present a compromise plan before the report is issued.

1. "To prevent further desertions"...maybe
It's also likely to prevent being tagged the President that re-instated the Draft. He's broken it and they can't keep the pace they've been operating on.

2. No, he is not considering it.
His only choice is to "stay the course" or escalate.

Let's not fool ourselves -- when he suggests that he's changing his mind on on any subject, he's lying.

3. This Isn't Even Good Tap-Dancing...
The manchild is looking for a new diversion...kicking the can again with new lipstick on the same pig. With Malaki's "government" not able to meet his own deadlines and the "base" getting skittish, he's gonna reshuffle the deck chairs on this Titanic so it stays afloat until 1/20/09...and then after that, he doesn't give a shit.

A couple slights of hand to watch here. First, is the number of troops "withdrawn" and where. Will this be 10,000 re-deployed in Iran Kuwait or the withdrawls are set for six or eight months down the road. Also, that the troops withdrawn are replace by 200k a year contractors who will continue the dirty war that imperils the regular military.

Boooshie knows he's gotta throw a bone to keep enough votes in the Senate to block defunding. This half-hearted gesture is a balloon to see if the "base" will accept this diversion and then play it up in the corporate media as some sign of "flexibility". It's a total sham....but what else would you expect?
