Former Bush surgeon general says he was muzzled
Former Bush surgeon general says he was muzzled

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The first U.S. surgeon general appointed by President George W. Bush accused the administration on Tuesday of political interference and muzzling him on key issues like embryonic stem cell research.

"Anything that doesn't fit into the political appointees' ideological, theological or political agenda is ignored, marginalized or simply buried," Dr. Richard Carmona, who served as the nation's top doctor from 2002 until 2006, told a House of Representatives committee.

"The problem with this approach is that in public health, as in a democracy, there is nothing worse than ignoring science, or marginalizing the voice of science for reasons driven by changing political winds. The job of surgeon general is to be the doctor of the nation, not the doctor of a political party," Carmona added.

Carmona said Bush administration political appointees censored his speeches and kept him from talking out publicly about certain issues, including the science on embryonic stem cell research, contraceptives and his misgivings about the administration's embrace of "abstinence-only" sex education.

2. Glad to hear it. Was worried that Carmona had gone completely to the dark side
Had a lot of respect for him before he spent that time in bush hell. Was very concerned that he did not speak out against the party line over science crap. Glad he is coming out about the problems.

3. What is significant to me is that his testimony was preceded by
his predecessors that told the same story; the politicization of science.

It was good to see Dr Carmona make his case so clearly on The News Hour.

4. Very important story.
Dr. Carmona is one of many brave public servants who've stepped forward.

May there be many more and may they all testify at the trials of Bush and his cronies.

Thanks, Kadie.

5. Odd. It has seemed that Shrub's nominees have all been bent on destroying the
entities they are named to. This is only the 3rd who has copped to cravenness of the mal-administration affecting them: The Treasury dude (SNOW?), the religion guy, and this one. It's still amazing that anybody with a shred of conscience would deceive themselves from the outset regarding what Shrub and his flying monkeys represent.
