Leahy ‘deeply disturbed’ by new Gonzales allegations
By Kara Oppenheim
July 10, 2007

Sen. Patrick Leahy (D-Vt.) said Tuesday he found reports “deeply disturbing” that Attorney General Alberto Gonzales misled Congress in an April hearing regarding the timing of his knowledge of civil liberties abuses by the FBI.

“Unfortunately, this administration’s penchant for secrecy makes it difficult to work in a cooperative way, and it is only through dogged oversight or Freedom of Information Act lawsuits — such as the one that revealed these inconsistent statements — that Congress and the American people learn the truth about this administration’s activities,” said Leahy, who chairs the Senate Judiciary Committee.

In response to follow-up questions from an April oversight hearing on the topic, the Department of Justice indicated to Leahy that Gonzales first learned of abuses by the FBI of National Security Letters (NSLs) through drafts of the Office of Inspector General’s report on NSL abuses, just before the report was publicly released in March.

The Washington Post reported today, however, that prior to Gonzales’s statements in support of renewing the Patriot Act in 2005, when he assured the Senate Intelligence Committee that “there has not been one verified case of civil liberties abuse,” the FBI had already sent reports to his office describing privacy violations and abuse of NSLs.

“This inconsistency is a disturbing addition to a growing list of misleading answers by the attorney general to questions from the Judiciary Committee, and it is unacceptable,” Leahy announced. “I intend to pursue this matter with the attorney general prior to his appearance before the Judiciary Committee later this month.”

1. Yeah, I find it 'deeply disturbing' when the mafia acts like the mafia, too...
...but I'm not in a position to do anything about it. How 'bout you, Senator?

2. None of it matters. This administration is run-out-the-clock mode.
All Dems on board to impeach is all that is left. They need to get the media to talk 24-7 about impeachment and get the country to learn once and for all how crime ridden these people are. The tide will turn albeit very slowly.

5. I'm gettin deeply disturbed by Leahy's lack of follow through
He talks real tough at every new Gonzales related outrage. But he never seems to accomplish anything. It's gonna happen again this week when Harriet Myers and that other ex WH staffer thumb their noses at the judiciary committee. Leahy will be furious at what they've done. Will he do anything about it? Not bloody likely.

And WTF is he going to "pursue this matter with the Attorney General" for? That asshole has no credibility left. Subpoena his ass and if he doesn't show up, send the marshals to the justice department and hauls his ass up to the hill in handcuffs.

7. Cut funding to the Justice Department as long as Gonzales remains in charge.
Edited on Tue Jul-10-07 04:00 PM by PA Democrat
Jonathan Turley, the constitutional law expert that is a frequent Countdown guest was on Randi Rhodes today, and this was his suggestion.

I agree. De-fund the Justice Department until Gonzales steps down. Why should the American taxpayers pay this guy's salary so he can screw us our of our civil liberties and then LIE to us?

Edited to remove errant comma

15. Doesn't this mean Gonzalez clearly perjured himself?
Why not simply impeach him for this obvious crime? Get a new AG in there and it is *over* for Bush.

17. Leahy suffers from Deanna Troi syndrome.
The USS Enterprise crew would be in the throes of battle against the Romulans or whatever, trying to stay alive, and she'd make a classic understatement like "Captain, I sense hostility." :eyes:

18. How many counts of Perjury does it take before Leahy does
something? Gonzo has about four counts that I have noticed.
