Senate panel cuts off funds to Cheney
Senate panel cuts off funds to Cheney
By ANDREW TAYLOR, Associated Press Writer
9 minutes ago

WASHINGTON - Senate Democrats moved Tuesday to cut off funding for Vice President Dick Cheney's office in a continuing battle over whether he must comply with national security disclosure rules.

A Senate appropriations panel chaired by Sen. Richard Durbin, D-Ill., refused to fund $4.8 million in the vice president's budget until Cheney's office complies with parts of an executive order governing its handling of classified information.

At issue is a requirement that executive branch offices provide data on how much material they classify and declassify. That information is to be provided to the Information Security Oversight Office at The National Archives.

Cheney's office, with backing from the White House, argues that the offices of the president and vice president are exempt from the order because they are not executive branch "agencies."

(snip)

"Neither Mr. Cheney or his staff is above the law or the Constitution," Durbin said. "For the vice president to believe that he has no responsibility to meet this requirement of the law is a dereliction of duty."

65. No problem. I made it smaller for the sig so I just upped the original for you.
Here it is. You can just right click and "save as" to download it. Or if you just want to reference it in posts right click and select "view image" and you'll see the imageshack url in the url bar. Or just add the h to the beginning of this:

ttp://img261.imageshack.us/img261/5630/cheneyxyn7.jpg

One of those options should do it for you.

20. Yeah, I saw it.
But I'm asking is the refusal finalized? Or is there more procedure? It mentions something about a failed House vote last month to do the same thing. Does it still need to come up for a vote in the House? Senate? Is it likely to go through?

27. I sense a concerted effort to go after Big Dick. How long before he resigns?
Jim Moran signed on to an Impeachment Resolution over on the House side, and now, this.

Will Condi Rice be a BushCo two-fer? The first Black VP, the first female VP? Or will he pick a more pedestrian candidate, like easily confirmed Lacky McCain?

Or will Big Dick dig in, snarl, and swipe the money he needs from the Black Ops budget, or worse yet, make the suffering NAVY pay for it? They get stuck with half of his shitty bills, anyway, because Big Dick lives in what USED to be (pre-Rockefeller) the CNO's house, while the CNO was crammed into a (by comparison only, mind) shitbox over at the Navy Yard.

I can hear Pat Leahy now: Go fuck myself? No, Dick, you go fuck YOUR self!!!

88. Exactly. Thanks, Malaise.
When I heard Chertoff's "gut feeling" on the tv this morning, I immediately wondered what new assault on the Bush Brigade had triggered the new terror alert du jour. Now I've put it together. I find it interesting that they've gone from "we have evidence" to a "gut feeling". Kind of a luke-warm threat alert. I think they finally suspect we're catching on to how the color-coded terror alert system is really used.

46. When you read an article
on Yahoo at the bottom of the article there are stars to rate it up. If you already have a yahoo mail account you simply sign in and can rate up the stories that need more visibility. :) If you don't have a yahoo mail account you can always sign up. I did this years ago so I could rate up news stories and I use the email for petitions and such.

http://durbin.senate.gov/contact.cfm

Senator Durbin,

THANK YOU for standing up to Cheney and *ush on the issue of witholding money from Cheney's office until he complies with the legal standards his office should uphold not run from.

One of the first things *ush did when he got into office was to hide the US Contractors list in a private company so it was not subject to the Freedom of Information Act. So after all these years, Americans are completely tired of hearing 9/11, need to know basis and YOU don't need to know.

*ushit.

WE have the right to know. This is America, not cold-war Russia or Nazi Germany. Someone had to tell *ush & Cheney and at least you have thrown down the guantlet on our behalf.

Thanks again.

I don't mean to be sassy or anything but that f*cker gets more from,...well,...never mind.

I suppose that must fund only his immediate staff.

74. Please don't let this be a dupe.
I'm starting to feel like Charlie Brown trying to kick a football held by Lucy. It's being pulled out everytime. Cheney could subsist on speaking fees alone. I'm sure the American Enterprise Institute could work up a few Billion, for a little talk about torture, and a few pictures. Ghouls. He could belong to them exclusively. How novel. He could work like any mercenary. Or prostitute. Favors for cash. Used V.P. for rent.

76. This would apply to the new fiscal year that starts in October
The Senate measure, which still must go to the chamber floor for a vote, would apply to the fiscal year starting in October and would involve only Cheney's office, which employs about 25 staff members, said Durbin spokesman Joe Shoemaker. It wouldn't affect funding for Cheney's official residence, he said.

94. Did you see Brownback's quote?
Such a step, said Sen. Sam Brownback, R-Kan., would set a terrible precedent in relations between the executive and legislative branches of government, which have historically let each other set their own budgets.

"This is going to further erode any sort of working relationship back and forth," Brownback said. "This is a patently bad idea."

Senator Brownback, what about the terrible precedent the VP is setting by refusing to follow the rules? If the working relationship is being eroded, isn't that the VP's fault? Didn't he start this? How, exactly, is the Senate supposed to reign him in?

96. Brownback is sad...(sniff)
In the article:

"Such a step, said Sen. Sam Brownback, R-Kan., would set a terrible precedent in relations between the executive and legislative branches of government, which have historically let each other set their own budgets."

Hah!!! Somebody need to tell Sam that Cheney isn't in the legislative branch anymore.
In fact, what makes this more plausible is that Cheney feels that he isn't considered part of the executive branch with regards to his handling of classified information - which means Durban is correct in calling Cheney to the carpet for his legislative branch budget. Unless Cheney is talking about his new 4th branch.

Cheers,
Binkles
