Florida has more small plane troubles...2 killed in Nchols crash
Our area is host to the Sun and Fun Fly In yearly, and will be hosting a new aerial aerobatics show soon. There appear to be no restrictions about flying around neighborhood areas, and small plane crashes are happening more and more.

This crash was at least in a rural setting, but the two occupants were killed. Then I heard of the one in Orlando.

SCOTT WHEELER/The Ledger
Investigators document the scene of a plane crash Monday near the Nichols community, southwest of Mulberry. The crash of the twin-engine 1967 Piper Comanche killed Robert Cunningham, 51, of Plant City, and Armando "Lincoln" Motta, 61, from Kissimmee, shortly after the men took off from Lakeland Linder Regional Airport about 8:15 a.m.

NICHOLS - Robert Cunningham, the 51-year-old passenger from Plant City who was killed in a plane crash in Nichols on Monday morning, was a passionate aviator and a familiar face at Lakeland Linder Regional Airport.

Cunningham died along with Armando "Lincoln" Motta, his 61-year-old friend from Kissimmee, soon after taking off from Lakeland. Motta was identified by the Polk County Sheriff's Office as the owner and pilot of the 1967 Piper Comanche.

Motta did not file a flight plan and was not required to by the FAA, according to Scott Pickett, Lakeland's tower chief.

And there was another recently.

It was the second double-fatal plane crash in Polk County this year.

On April 16, two Ohio men headed for the Sun 'n Fun Fly-in died when their plane crashed while attempting to land at Lakeland Linder Regional Airport.

Frank Marsico of Port Orange was still listed Monday as the owner on the FAA Web site. Marsico said he sold the plane about two months ago but did not know the name of the buyer and said the aircraft was due for an overhaul of its engines and annual maintenance.

4. There absolutely are restrictions. I can't figure out what point you're trying to make here.

6. Call Lakeland City Hall and ask them restrictions on Sun and Fun
and flying all over the city. There were none when I called once. They said they took care of everything at the Sun and Fun group. Don't argue with me, just talk to them.

What is my point? Hell, I don't know. A lot of small plane crashes?

8. Well, cities have no jurisdiction over aircraft flights (except
ground operations on municipally owned airports.) I usually manage to get to Sun n Fun but couldn't make it this year.
It's illegal to fly lower than 1000 feet over populated areas unless it's a departure or landing. City hall has no say in it, the FAA does.

There are not really a lot of small plane crashes...the reason it -seems- that way is that virtually every one makes the news.

7. Could you be specific about what is wrong with what I posted?
I posted my opinion, I posted an article and a picture of yet another small plane crash.

I am careful here to post stuff that is true, so I would like to know what you meant.

During Sun and Fun Fly In we are under a constant drone for miles of these planes, and also jets that come. It's unbearable.

If you see something wrong, be specific.

9. I didn't say there was anything "wrong" with it. I see now you just don't like
airplanes which is your privilege.

11. I don't like airplanes?? Uh....where did you get that?
I think people have rights to not have a whole week of unbearable noise just so they can have fun. Let them fly over rural areas not our neighborhoods.

I never cease to be amazed here at DU. I have tried not to post controversial stuff since folks are so wound up here right now.

But I post about a plane crash and get accused of not liking planes.

Ok....

12. Well that's how it sounded to me. But now I get it...a NIMBY thing.
You like them as long as they stay away from YOUR neighborhood. Apparently you live under the airport's traffic pattern. One question: was the airport there when you moved near it?

I have had intelligent conversations with you before, but I am sure as hell giving up on this one.

You don't even make sense. You appear to be trying to bait me, so I am backing off.

I asked you a simple question, was the airport there before you? Why is it so difficult to answer?

Wow, I thought I would not be controversial posting this...but looks like I pushed buttons anyway.

19. Wait, we are talking about the Lakeland Airport, right? It was built in 1927.
You've lived near it since before then? Look, I'm not 'acting' any way, I'm just wondering why you went on such a tear about airplane noise. Let's just drop it. Jeezus.

20. I don't live near it. I live a long way from it. Yes, my home has been here longer.
Edited on Tue Jul-10-07 07:15 PM by madfloridian
Sorry about that, but it has. I live in a home my family lived in. We live in one of the historical neighborhoods, and yes I think the noise is very excessive.

And thanks for the insinuation I am lying. Hell, I am going to post about politics and jump in with both feet.

10. I understand your frustrations here.
I know people who are pilots and have flown in their small planes when they were trying to get their hours in. I've got no problems with small planes or pilots.

I do, however, have a problem with those who think it's OK to do stunts approximately 50 feet above my house. I live adjacent to a fly-in community. I knew when I bought the house that I was near an airport. I had no clue that those flying out of this airport thought it was perfectly fine to take flight at about 6:00 AM on weekends with their loud-ass engines. I had no idea that the "antiques" they like to fly need carbon dating they're so old. Heck, I had no idea that the pilots flying them also needed carbon dating (I've seen some of them at the grocery store -- some of them can barely shuffle or see, they're so decrepit).

Every time a small plane crashes in Florida, I'm sad, but I'm also thankful that my family and I have lived to see another day and don't have a plane on top of us. Although the majority of plane crashes are not due to unsafe practices or negligence, I completely understand your frustration when deliberate stunt flying or unnecessary maneuvers are intentionally done over residential areas.

13. No pilot ever does a "stunt" at 50 feet more than once.

Also there are old pilots and there are bold pilots but there are no old bold pilots.

16. Hubby's cousin was a winner one year in the ultra-lites..
We attended the closing dinner with him....but I reserve the right to think humans have more rights than planes. And the crash in Nichols makes 4 in Central Florida since January.

15. Never surprised here at DU.
I post about small airplane accidents and get accused of hating airplanes and wanting to over ride pilots' rights....I think that is what it is.

Wow. I might as well post about the DLC or maybe Howard Dean....if I am going to be chastised for posting about small plane tragedies...I might as post about my favorites and raise real hell.

22. 2nd small plane crash near Orlando...in two days. Video.
Edited on Wed Jul-11-07 07:54 PM by madfloridian
This makes four or five crashes of small planes in Central Florida since January, I believe.

2nd Plane Crash In As Many Days Near Orlando

(CBS4) ORLANDO For a second time in as many days, a small plane has gone down in the Orlando area but this time no major injuries have been reported.

A twin-engine Piper Navajo crashed Wednesday morning as it tried to land on one of Orlando International Airport's runways, causing a small brush fire. The pilot walked away with minor injuries.

There are no reports of any other injuries.

Tuesday, five people were killed when a small plane crashed into nearby homes in Sanford that caught on fire. Two were on board the plane, three were inside the homes. Among the dead was the the husband of International Speedway Corporation President Lesa France Kennedy and a NASCAR Aviation pilot. A four-year-old girl also died.

Here is more about yesterday's Orlando crash.

5 Die When Small Plane Crashes Into 2 Houses

ORLANDO - Five people - including the husband of NASCAR official Lesa France Kennedy and a toddler on the ground - were killed Tuesday morning when a small plane struggling to land at Orlando Sanford International Airport slammed into a house and burst into flames.

A 10-year-old boy and his parents in that Sanford home also suffered critical burns in the fireball after the twin-engine Cessna 310 crashed and killed Dr. Bruce Kennedy and Michael Klemm, a senior captain with NASCAR Aviation

"Experimental plane crash kills two
Lakeland, Florida — Authorities have identified two people killed Monday in the crash of a small plane near the Lakeland Linder Regional Airport.

Dead are the pilot, Terrence Albert Sack, 61, of Dublin Ohio, and a passenger Roger L. Caldwell, 56, of Blacklick, Ohio. Polk sheriff's deputies said they were reported overdue to arrive at Lakeland Linder Airport by their wives.

The men were flying in what is believed to be Wheeler Experimental Single Engine aircraft when it crashed into several pine trees just off the roadway at 4341 Waring Road, Lakeland, deputies said.

The aircraft was approaching runway 27 from the north when witnesses say the plane appeared to overcorrect and speed downward, crashing into the ground and bursting into flames."
