I was told this at the health food store today, is this bogus?
A gal that works at the health food store tried to tell me our choices with supplements is safer with GWB because of the religous right. I made a terrible face I'm sure and told her I didn't think this was accurate considering we don't even really have a constitution under this regime.

any insight out there on this concept?

One thing is for sure, I'm damn tired of big pharma taking over and scared to death of losing health supplements and the organic/wild juice I drink being unavailable. I've spent 10 yrs in the medical system and had no luck with chronic pain and have taken things into my own hands and getting dramatically better. What we call health care here is basically a rip off.

1. Did she give any idea of how/why the religious right makes supplements safe?
It seems like a total nonsequitor to me. Maybe she believes in faith-based nutrition?

I wonder why she said that as I can see no reasoning behind it.

10. My thought too. Or perhaps
with fewer people getting healthcare, more people depend on supplements as their only form of healthcare and they are all praying to stay healthy.

7. She said it was because when he was governor
he vetoed a bill that dieticians could control all nutritional info.

I told her his behavior at the state level had no bearing on his behavior at the national level because at the state level he hadn't attempted to dismantle the constitution.

I also told her when the constitution was being drafted, medical freedom was debated but not actually put in the constitution. Wish they had.

14. Wow. So preventing dieticians from being involved
makes them safer?

I don't have a lot of faith in dieticians. Most of them are poorly trained and know very little about ethnic foods, vegetarianism, etc. They tend to believe the food industry marketting and propaganda. But still, they at least have some minimal science behind them.

18. we're writing syncronized, but just looked at OP again.
I think the person was saying that our choice of supplements is less limited, less regulated, because mrbush opened sales and the giving of "information" to whomever, not just dieticians. You have more choices of where to get information. I think that is what was saying.

22. "our choices with supplements is safer" sounds like only our ability to chose was safer
not that anything we could chose is any safer, but that he didn't want to limit our ability to have choices. Oh dear, does this mean mrbush is pro-choice for supplements? I don't get the religious right either, except if one were to assume that he is controlled by or panders to them to not limit anything, unlike us spinless democrats.

with Big Pharma paying the big bucks to dictate everything they want to this maladministration, supplements are sure to be safe.

You need to find out what that woman takes for supplements and avoid all of them, religiously.

Supplements can be sold with any crazy thing in them and no one will look over their shoulder.

The GWB regime doesn't believe in government doing its job.

13. That is not correct
If a product has created problems, the spotlight goes on that product.

Remember ma-huang? Full of ephedra and caused heart problems for folks. It is not a substance that should be used without supervision. Those substances come to light.

6. Check your bag carefully, the RWer might have slipped some Kool-Aid in
while you weren't looking.

We're getting poisonous food from China.

They've relaxed food labeling rules.

They've slashed the budget for the FDA so there are fewer inspectors.

How do you suppose we're safer given this situation? I think the chick at the store must have smoked some melamine from China on her break!

8. The bottom line
is that most supplements sold are not proven safe, efficacious, bioavailable, contaminate free, nor containing the ingredients listed on the bottle.

A new regulation passed by the FDA will at least address two of the issues (contaminate free and truth in labeling) in two years.

11. Utter hogwash
I just read a good book on this, but can't remember title. A scathing critique of the industry. Many of these nutritional supplement companies are in the RW heartland and major - ultra major - contributors to the ultra rw fringe of the party - bought and paid for. These companies have been run by felons - RW felons, perhaps, but felons nonetheless. Under this administration, the FDA has been hamstrung from investigating the worst of the abuses by these supplement companies. So, no, your nutritional supplements, which may be pointless and dangerous in the first place, are almost certainly less safe under this administration.

I use ALOT of natural supplements and am well aware of the things that this idiot and his gang have done to try to make it easier for BIG PHARMA to make grabs for everything that they possibly can, including the natural supplement market. They can't even certify that the food chain isn't contaminated with one thing or another and under them, it has actually become ILLEGAL for producers of beef cattle to test their OWN herds for BSE. I completely agree with you where it comes educating ourselves and learning how to use nature to heal and to trest chronic conditions...Boy, do I understand your point but as far as the moron in chief making ANYTHING safer, let alone natural supplements, girlfriend at the health coop is delusional.

Welcome to DU BTW, right glad ta meetcha!!:hi:

30. Thanks everybody! Just a few thoughts.
This is sort of the way I'm looking at supplements- tell me if this makes sense.

We've depleted our soils, our foods are not as nutritious as they once were (this was documented way back in the 30's in of all places, the congressional record) so I don't want supplements made illegal because that would mean we'd have to rely on big pharma for our right to LIVE a relatively normal existence and as I mentioned earlier, I found this out after suffering for 10 years to the point of thinking I couldn't make it long enough to get a destroyed disk fixed (because of course I'm fighting with insurance companies).

Then I have some organic/wild fruit juice given to me and blow me down- I woke up on the eighth day, totally not believing the difference. Now I'm not totally pain free, but I've only had 1 pain pill all year- and although I never abused them, I definitely needed them before to function for any period at all during the day. I initially thought- could this be in my head? But since I ran out, I got to test that one and ended up laid out on the couch for 3 days until I could get more.

So needless to say, I'm royally pissed the medical community couldn't see my disc was GONE for over 6 years (I had x rays, MRI's you name it) and I saw every tom, dick and harry doctor there was and since then, they just allowed me to suffer and dope me up. I couldn't sober up til noon from painkillers.

So now I'm a fanatic and would totally freak if supplements were illegal.

20. Are saying that because of mrbush we have more choices? That our ability to choose is safer?
Not that the stuff or info is any safer, but because of mrbush our choices of what to get and from whom is more open vs being limited (regardless of whether limitations or oversight is good)? I reread and think she was saying we can get whatever we want at anywhere whenever because he made it so. Am I right?

27. Read "Natural Causes" by Dan Hurley
I don't think B*sh himself is going around inspecting things. Still, if the FDA does it, more power to them.

A lot of people seem to think that supplements are some kind of magic medicine and better than drugs just because of that magic word, "natural." Well, hemlock, cyanide and cocaine are natural. :eyes: Adding mysticism to something doesn't make it benevolent.

I don't buy this conspiracy theory bullshit that somehow mainstream doctors just don't want you to get better, and big companies are just sitting around rubbing their hands and saying, "We got another one today!" Give me a break. People who go into medicine may not all be saints and angels, true, but that doesn't mean some snake oil salesmen has your best interests in mind by default.

Supplements are by and large ineffective, and often dangerous. Just because something is made from plants doesn't mean it's good for you.

There is a scary undercurrent of anti-science sentiment here that comes from resentment of the health system. Granted, the system needs a lot of fixing, but that doesn't mean witch doctors are any better.

29. when there is a scientific, double-blind study, many supplements fail to
show that they do anything at all...SamE, St John Wort, tryptophan, shark's cartilege, etc. Placebos really help those who believe in them, but they should be pure and safe. The supplement industry are big contributors to repukes because the repukes won't make them go through FDA testing to prove they are of any benefit at all and are made with quality control.

natural therapies don't have to prove anything. I think people should have the right to buy and use them of course, but the bad part is that the natural therapies don't have to show purity or have any quality control. You really don't know what you are taking and whether it works as it is now.
