WASHINGTON: A conservative senator from America’s Bible Belt has apologised after being exposed as a former customer of an upscale prostitution agency whose massive client list is said to include many Washington power brokers.

David Vitter, a Republican lawmaker from Louisiana, issued a statement late Monday acknowledging “a very serious sin in my past,” after his telephone number appeared on a phone list of clients connected to the escort service run by Washington’s “DC Madam.”

“This was a very serious sin in my past for which I am, of course, completely responsible,” Vitter said in the statement published in the state’s leading newspaper, The New Orleans Times-Picayune, along with other local and national media.

The married father of four continued: “Several years ago, I asked for and received forgiveness from God and my wife in confession and marriage counselling.”

The first-term senator, whose congressional career has centred largely on issues of marriage, family and morality, added: “Out of respect for my family, I will keep my discussion of the matter there – with God and them. But I certainly offer my deep and sincere apologies to all I have disappointed and let down in any way.”

17. Didn't his wife
make a comment that she's in the Lorena Bobbitt mold and if her hubby ever cheated, he better watch out? I thought I read that.

7. There are two exceptions
Florida )South of I-4 (Tampa to Daytona Beach) due to yankee and carribean influences and New Orleans due to the influence of bourbon.

11. not just the bourbon, it's the Catholics
South Louisiana is mostly Catholic....Catholic and Bible-belt are pretty much mutually exclusive--although the repukes have done their damnedest to bring them together in an unholy alliance

10. hey, here in Louisiana we have what's known as the "Pine Curtain"
sort of like the "Iron Curtain"...It refers to the divide between North and South Louisiana. North Louisiana is Baptists and assorted other fundies--very, very hardcore Bible belt. South Louisiana is Catholic and not really Bible belt. New Orleans of course is a world of its own and in no way Bible belt. Vitter is from a New Orleans suburb and is a Catholic, and "Bible belt" doesn't describe the majority of his constituents. This scandal I'm afraid won't hurt his political career down here--but at least it will knock him out of the veep sweepstakes, and of course a future go at the big prize--it's no secret that he's always thought of himself as presidential material.

16. Politicians who....
work so desperately to convince everyone--within the context of a marketing campaign--that they're moral--are usually the ones
with the most skeletons in their closet.

Kind, compassionate people who love their families do not have to traipse around the country spewing
talking points that showcase how decent, family-centered and pius they are.

Watch out for anyone with a "My opponent has no values because I have them all!" sign...pandering
to armies of rapture-ready buffoons.
