CINDY SHEEHAN (At Kos) "I Have Been Warned"
I have been "warned"
by CindySheehan
Thu Jul 12, 2007 at 06:16:05 AM PDT
I can't post here anymore because my potential run for Congress
is not on the Democratic ticket.

I have been deeply grateful for all of your support over the years.
Your love and kindness helped me through lots of sleepless nights
at Camp Casey '05.

If Speaker Pelosi does her constitutionally mandated duty and I don't run,
then I can come back and post.

I know a lot of you are hostile towards my candidacy. Please
understand that I am doing it for your children and grandchildren
(and my surviving ones.)

Love always,
Cindy

I wonder if Bush would describe what he is doing as "for your children and grandchildren"? Why in fact I'm pretty sure he would.

41. And the ones criticizing her aren't doing a damn thing
but criticize Cindy. We have one in our group, Muse. Never comes to anything but a social event. Never comes to rallies or vigils, or even free movies, has never held a sign, doesn't lobby or even call Congress. See all of those activist activities would interfere with keyboard commando time.

I have also asked many of these Cindy haters what they are doing to end the war. The most common response is a description of what they did during the Vietnam War - like that gives them a free pass today. One of them even told me last winter that it was too cold to stand outside and hold a sign! Poor baby.

Just makes me sick. Put your feet on the ground and THEN you can be part of the dialogue and discuss strategy. Keyboard commandos need not apply.

I know exactly what you mean about keyboard commandos. I don't think they are worthless but I do wonder how they can complain when they don't do anything.

I sure do. I understand busy lives and familes and careers. But to sit here and do nothing but BASH activists is just wrong, IMO.

I am not talking about people who criticize what Cindy does. They have every right to do that. I am talking about DUers I KNOW who honestly only come here to call Cindy names, yet they claim they are progressives. They NEVER put their feet on the ground. And no one is too busy to at least make a phone call once in awhile. I have a friend who is home bound and disabled and she does more to end the war than most anyone else I know. It's called putting your money where your mouth is.

on a discussion board. That's one heavy assumption, I say. I would reckon many of us are quite active, even if we're not makin' the news like Ms. Cindy.

Meanwhile, identifying people who disagree as "haters" smacks way too much of what Republicans have done to us in the past. "Why do you hate the president? Why are you a hater?"

114. Since when is impeachment a "core democratic value?"
Appropriate wages and housing, access to good education and to health care, assuring dignified retirement, adequate infrastructure, safety of products - these are.

These are the issues that matter to most voters who - except for many DUers, of course - will see impeachment proceedings as just another political game - the way it was with Clinton, and they won't bother to see the difference.

Plus, do you really think that there are enough votes in the Senate to remove Bush from office?

Cindy is trying to wedge off Democratic votes with the same justifications used in 2000 to make possible the Bush disaster. Remember Democrats aren't good enough so we need to send them a message? What we wound up with was Iraq and the other products of Bush and a Democratic Party that ran to the middle because they couldn't count on the base. Those first four years were the most spineless ever.

I see Cindy trying to repeat that disastrous strategy. Many are joining her too.

57. Or you could choose to forgive me
which was the point I was trying to make. No one has said the party STILL condones slavery. Honestly, I thought it was a dumb thing for Cindy to say but I do understand what she meant and you can't argue against history - it IS true. My own grandmother was a lifelong yellow dog Democrat and as bigoted as a person could be in her time. She wanted to leave the party over the civil rights legislation in the 60s! I can still remember passionate arguments with her. I was just a kid and I thought she was nuts and a racist fool. But there were indeed many Dems in her age group who were very bigoted. She was from the south - so it was a double whammy.

And I will repeat - the Democratic party has more than made up for its past racist leanings. But if you want to hate me, go ahead. And if you want to hold me accountable for my racist grandmother, that's fine too. I always have regretted never slapping the shit out of her. :)

132. The white people that loved slavery were a very small minority of rich white people.
Edited on Thu Jul-12-07 05:44 PM by rhett o rick
My ancestors were poor emigrants that worked in sweatshops and lived in poverty. They didn't support or gain a thing from slavery. Many fought for the abolition of slavery. Most if not all the white people in the lower ranks fighting on the side of the Confederacy were poor farmers that had no slaves. They were fighting because they were told to by their government. Your comment "since white people loved slavery" is very misleading.

She could and should be a sympathetic character but she has turned herself into a shrew.

Fame destroys everyone.

We are in this mess because the GOP agreed to march in lock step. On the one hand I don't want to belong to a party that demands that kind of loyalty but a little discipline appears to be needed to keep the Nader's from splitting the vote.

I think your post says a lot. You do want a lock step party. you know that's what the republicans do, but you like the discipline. yes it would be so much easier if everyone saw eye to eye with the party leaders. If the Party leaders are dragging their feet and some want more, i don't blame them. Corporate America has a lot of control in the Democratic Party. Enough to discourage many. If the Democratic Party can't provide a platform that the Nadar's and the Sheehan's like, then more power to them for standing up for their principles. Keeping our powder dry is getting way old.

139. I do not think we should keep our powder dry
Seems the Nader's and the Sheehan's are the ones who want it both ways. They want to "stand up for their principles" by splitting the Dem vote which elects Republicans. Which leads to an insufficient number of votes in Congress to stop the war or impeach the bastards.

Seems to me you can do it one of two ways: run against the Dems or try to change the Dems. I'm too old to wait around for some 3rd party to take over. I want my country AND my party back.

I'm staying and fighting for both.

You leave and we all get nothing....except your principles.

I'm willing to compromise on some things...like not engaging in a useless exercize of impeaching a president who will not be convicted and will leave us with Cheney.

That's looney.

There are no grounds for impeachment. Why do you think they went after Clinton for lying? They didn't have anything else. They didn't hate him for lying. They formed an "impeach Clinton" group in November of 1992. You got evidence he lied about the war? No. Because you can't prove it. Any more than you can prove I think Sheehan hurts her cause more than helps it.

150. Splitting the progressive vote (Democrat vs. Independent) sometimes helps Republicans win
Edited on Thu Jul-12-07 10:42 PM by Pushed To The Left
This is why a lot of us get upset when this happens. If Cindy Sheehan ran as a Democrat and challenged Nancy Pelosi in the primaries, many people who are angry at her now would be sending her money! I'm a little calmer about this than I normally would be because I don't think a Republican would have much of a chance in Pelosi's district. If it weren't a safe district I would be steaming, because I don't want any more right wing Republicans in Congress.

If you "can't post here anymore," then how did you post this diary?

I would expect, instead, that you were warned that promoting a candidacy in something other than the Democratic Party went against the purpose of this site, and that's the truth.

I still don't understand how you plan to impeach the President between January 3, 2009 and January 20, 2009.

I don't understand why the democratic party isn't willing to embrace independents when nearly half the population is prepared to register as an independent. As a matter of fact, I didn't think the democratic party rejected anyone just based upon political affiliation.

Pelosi's district votes almost 90% Democratic/Progressive. The last Rethug candidate barely hit double digits.

Let's say Cindy *does* split the Dem vote. Right down the middle. Now do the math...does that lead to a Rethug in office?

118. Few Republicans in SF, but they swing elections in SF
Because they usually all vote for one of the Democrats or candidates least odios to them.

It's also likely that they mostly voted for Gavin Newsom against Green Party Matt Gonzales in the last mayoral race. Ironic in that race that Republicans voted more uniformly for Newsom than Democrats did for Newsom.

Thus, they voted for Willie Brown for mayor and they currently vote for Pelosi and not the placeholder Republican on the ballot.

ps-regarding the Greens around here:
In the mayoral electio accused (nay, lied) Newsom of contributing to Bush's campaign. (Got no time for Green Party -no time whatsoever anymore)

I was in Chicago for that election, and I voted against Rostenkowski. There are plenty of solid rethugs in my former home town, and most of the Dems are far-right compared to what we have out here.

Also, that election had an undeniably corrupt candidate running in a two-way race BEFORE * completely destroyed the GOP. To even compare the two situations is ludicrous.

24. From the website
Markos Moulitsas writes:
"This is a Democratic blog, a partisan blog. One that recognizes that Democrats run from left to right on the ideological spectrum, and yet we're all still in this fight together.

We happily embrace centrists like NDN's Simon Rosenberg and Howard Dean, conservatives like Martin Frost and Brad Carson, and liberals like John Kerry and Barack Obama.

Liberal? Yeah, we're around here and we're proud. But it's not a liberal blog. It's a Democratic blog with one goal in mind: electoral victory."

Explanation (again, quoting from the website):
"...the purpose of the site is 1) to elect Democrats, while 2) reforming the party, opening it up, and making it more responsive to its members, and then 3) to elect reform Democrats and create a progressive Democratic majority. Therefore, Daily Kos will not endorse or condone non-Democratic candidacies except in those very rare situations -- Bernie Sanders in Vermont is the only one to come to mind -- where there is not a bona fide Democratic candidate running for the office."

the Democrats are NOT doing nearly enough to fight voter fraud, especially the disenfranchising of minorities and I don't have a good answer as to why. It's not, in my opinion, a good reason to throw up my hands and abandon the party though. There are lots of party activists who are working hard to change this. Like any large organization, the bureaucracy can be a hindrance, it's frustrating sometimes.

70. That Is The Reason She Is Divisive
Divisive, as demonstrated above. For all her genuine strength, Ms Sheehan's stance is that of a victim, appealing to our compassion. This is a passive, blank-slate, negative role which will not work in current American politics.

The mind, individual & group, does not hear negatives. It usually moves toward, almost never away. If you are trying to quit smoking & think "Quit smoking," the mind will hear "Smoking," & light one up. If you think, in a positive manner, "Fresh air, better wind, good health," the mind will move toward that, not toward smoking.

Personally, I'd love to see the Democratic leadership embarrassed & moved to action, & I feel Ms Sheehan accomplished a great deal of important work as "the face of war protest." I doubt she would be as effective in the electoral arena. This is a critique of methods, not goals. Sadly, there are indeed many, many victims, & our national compassion badly needs to be aroused, but Gandhi — who I don't believe ever ran for office, did he? — would probably be shot even sooner in the US than he was in India.

Or perhaps it's that Ms Sheehan is not Gandhi-like enough. The comments above about "too much 'I,' 'I,' 'I' " also point to her emphasis on personal victimization. Rightly or wrongly, victims are inherently seen as weak, & to deliberately choose that stance in a contest is, unless you are an aikido master, inadvisable.

54. I hope she can post here....
she stands for Democratic ideals...more than some of the Blue Dogs do.

What can you expect from Kos? He's a military ex-repugnant who has BIG problems with seeing women as equals...

I think this strategy that Cindy is using is brilliant...pushes Pelosi to do the right thing. We must Impeach...the evil that has ruled and ruined our nation must be dealt with. We must demand JUSTICE. Look what happened when Iran-Contra wasn't dealt with...they all returned and put us in this massive mess.

I am with you Cindy...brilliant political tactic, IMHO. You are brave and I so admire you. I got your back.

IMPEACH NOW!

61. So what, why doesn't she start her own website..
I'm sure her thousands of supporters would gladly go there and meet her. Why does she need Skinner or Kos to get her message out?

I also don't understand why she's so shocked at getting "bashed" or "smeared" after her caustic posting the other day, and I have no doubt there's been some of that, but I've also observed that people, including myself, who have come to the defense of the Democratic party, and been critical of some of her false and ridiculous statements, have been falsely and unfairly accused of "bashing".

Hostility begets hostility, you reap what you sow.

86. Agreed. The RW talking points she used in her post of 7-9-07
to bash the Democratic party on a Democratic website were beyond the pale, indefensible imo. And the melodramatic exit....let's just say I don't think Pelosi is feeling too threatened. She would be much better off having her own site.

Democratic principles do not allow for the silencing of dissent. Unfortunately, the Democratic Party is not always driven by democratic principles, and neither are many individual Democrats.

Not all sites will seek to silence your attempts to hold an elected Democrat accountable. You will still be heard.

Edited on Thu Jul-12-07 10:38 AM by Strawman
Our representatives shouldn't be comfortable with the status quo.

She's not a serious candidate.

She's not a serious threat to Pelosi's re-election.

But she might be just enough of a threat to put some pressure on her and the Democrats in Congress. Personally, I'd like to see her place more pressure placed on Republicans besides the President. Maybe she will. Maybe she has and I'm not aware of it. I do worry that maybe she is so tired of feeling ineffectual that she is targeting the only people who she thinks even care enough to listen.

She may make some specious, irrational claims in her critique of the party, but she's a citizen who is trying her damndest to end this war and I respect her. I don't have to agree with every claim she makes to admire her.

Cindy Sheehan on Kudlow & Company Tonight

Anti-war activist, Gold Star Mother and peace mom Cindy Sheehan will appear on Kudlow and Company this evening for a one-on-one interview.

Earlier this week, Ms. Sheehan announced plans to run as an independent against Nancy Pelosi next year if the congresswoman doesn't move to impeach President Bush by July 23rd. The crux of her early stage campaign is built around Bush being impeached and an immediate end to the war in Iraq.

Of course, I strongly disagree with Ms. Sheehan’s proposals and her politics.

And while I intend to give her a respectful hearing, I will of course challenge her opinions.

that none of the statements that caused the uproar over the past few days were directly addressed by Ms. Sheehan in her new messages? It makes it seem like she meant them "as is."
