President Passes The Buck On Iraq
Harry Smith: President Bush Blames His Advisers For Missteps In The War


New York, July 13, 2007

(CBS) This column was written by CBS News Early Show co-anchor Harry Smith .

When Tommy Franks retired as the general who won the war in Iraq, he wrote a best-selling book and went on the speakers' circuit. He stood in the White House and was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom. He'd appear in front of crowds and say, "Ain't this a great country," and crowds would whoop and cheer.

I wonder if Gen. Franks was watching President Bush's news conference Thursday. The president didn't hesitate to blame Franks for mistakes made in Iraq. He said, "My primary question to Gen. Franks was 'Do you have what it takes to succeed, and do you have what it takes after you succeed in removing Saddam Hussein,' and his answer was, ‘Yeah.'"

Hearing that yesterday, I was stunned. I'm pretty sure I heard the Commander in Chief passing the buck. It sounded to me like he was saying, "We’d have done better; I just got bad advice."

Who else is on that list? Donald Rumsfeld? Dick Cheney? I wonder.

to "bad advice"

From the beginning, Bush came with a ready made excuse for all his actions.

"He surrounds himself with smart people" (so he doesn't have to know stuff - cause he's got all these "smart people")

WTF did people think that meant? It meant he had people to blame. All those "smart" people who give him bad intel and bad advice.

a funny talking good old boy we want to have a beer with because he's just like us who surrounds himself with smart to help him...that's the image they cultivated for a reason.

I hope he pisses off the wrong guy

I'd like Franks to light in to him the way MM did Wolfie.

I'd suggest he start by amending his remarks about Doug Feith:

Franks, according to Bob Woodward's 2004 Plan of Attack, says of Feith: "I have to deal with the fucking stupidest guy on the face of the earth almost every day."

to state emphatically that Feith is only second stupidest - that bush gets the prize.

We need someone to absolutely throw caution, politeness, civility, political correctness to the wind, and look straight into the camera and say bush is a deceitful lying sack of shit

then we break out the popcorn while the others pile on
