Tough Talk on Impeachment

A public opinion poll from the American Research Group recently reported that more than four in ten Americans — 45% — favor impeachment hearings for President Bush and more than half — 54% — favored impeachment for Vice President Cheney.

Unhappiness about the war in Iraq isn't the only cause of the unsettled feelings of the electorate. Recent events like President Bush's pardoning of Scooter Libby, the refusal of Vice President Cheney's office to surrender emails under subpoena to Congress and the President's prohibition of testimony of former White House counsel Harriet E. Miers in front of the House Judiciary Committee have caused unease over claims of "executive privilege." In addition, many of the White House anti-terror initiatives and procedures — from the status of "enemy combatants" in Guantanamo to warrantless wiretapping — have come under legal scrutiny in Congress and the courts.

Bill Moyers gets perspective on the role of impeachment in American political life from Constitutional scholar Bruce Fein, who wrote the first article of impeachment against President Bill Clinton, and THE NATION's John Nichols, author of THE GENIUS OF IMPEACHMENT.

Can you go to pbs.org and go to bill moyers journal and watch, they have podcasts, even though my computer slow, I can do live stream.

I will be venturing out of the comfort of my home. Though I will not have so large an audience as Bill M, several hundred people will hear my views on impeaching VP Cheney.

But, you can still download when convenient, there are some shows that I download, usually I have a choice, video or mp3,
I download to my mp3 and listen while I cut the grass.

But I think you have done a great job on following the twists and turns of Plamegate and if you can nudge people in the
right direction, I think it's a wonderful thing.

I definitely think if we do not impeach we will have broken our checks and balance system forever, and a fix of "next time"
is only hot air.

we need to say things like country before party, and didn't they take a oath to protect the Constitution, and impeachment is a cure for a constitutional crisis, we have to make them listen to us. They just granted themselves a raise, geez, do they deserve that raise, I don't think so.

Short of traveling to DC...and even then we'd likely not get an appointment...

There's no way to know if they even hear about the calls we make, or read our letters. If you get a purported written response it's some form letter that doesn't even address your issue.

...or we will be committing democratic suicide. I only wish we could expel congress persons who are not upholding the constitution by impeaching Bush and Cheney. Pelosi needs to be the first one kicked out and then all the other cowards and traitors to their constitutional oath of office. They don't understand the Constitution or the history surrounding its creation. If they don't impeach then we are f*cked and I am moving to B.C.

I smell something, but at 1000 miles I can't tell if it's fear or corruption.
It would be entirely within Dick and junior's idioms to threaten and blackmail Democrats into inaction. It would almost certainly work, because the threatened party doesn't lose anything personally for cooperating.( "What's more important, Mrs Pelosi, your grand children's eyes or your Party Line?")
They did open with a directed Anthrax attack from government arsenals, after all.
It could also be plain old corruption.
Part of the reason I personally despise the Republican party is the fact that I get thrust back into poverty every time they gain power. A Krakatau sized mountain of money might blunt some of that hatred, in spite of my better judgment.
Once again the affected party does not suffer regardless of the political outcome. If they get discovered and voted out- they're rich from the bribe and the fat pension.
If it's the first case, it has to be counter forced. Distribute the components of their thugs into a hundred different dumpsters and they'll back off.
If it's the second - we need a new party immediately.

I think the big road block to impeachment is the war itself. If congress starts impeachment hearings the republickin's start screaming about impeaching a president during a time of war and how bad that would be for troop morale, emboldiening our enemy, etc.. It will become the rallying cry of the next election. The war, no matter how unpopular, is the great buffer for the administration. But it is also the most compelling argument for impeachment to stop precedent. If the bushies skate through their term, it tells future presidents that they should immediately start a war and then anything they do is O.K.

The Moyers peace was excellent. Ironic that he was playing devil's advocate to a conservative constitutional expert. It showed that conservatives really should be the one's screaming the loudest. Don't they claim that liberals are the ones who "invent" law instead of following the rule of law. There really are no conservatives in shrubs base, only republicans.

I believe the preservation of our constitution is much more important than any personal or political agenda. If we let the constitution become powerless and obsolete then we are no longer the USA but we are something other of which I do not know or wish to be a part of. I will move out of this country if they do not impeach Bush and Cheney and I will watch the destruction of the USA from B.C. where I will have health care and no war and a lot more security and peace of mind.

Damn.... should be MANDATORY watching for all citizens.

It is almost laughable because I thought Bill Moyers did a pretty good job playing the devil's advocate a few times. Well, it's going to be back to the daily e-mailing and calling!

More truth in 1 hour than I've heard in a long time. Fein and Nichols made absolutely unassailable arguments why it is the duty of congress and all of us to impeach. If you're still not convinced about impeachment, watch this and you will be. It would convince all but the most kool-aid addled. I wish we could strap all of our congresscritters to chairs and make them watch. We would have a different country when it was over.

After the... "late Friday afternoon, end of the week, most NOT paid attention to the news (what news there is)" ...report of the executive privilege in NOT turning over documents regarding Pat Tillman...I hope that will be the last most disgusting move this administration does. We are soooooo OVERDUE for impeachment....please God...
