Impeachment is Mandatory
Who’s Kidding Whom?
by Peter Stern

During the past seven years President George Walker Bush, Vice President Dick Cheney and their administration, a.k.a., advisors, have plundered American taxpayers in the name of their own very special interests—“the need for greed." The hardest-hit are America’s poor, especially via the Medicare and Medicaid programs.

Consequently, the American people have been deceived, lied to, taken advantage of and lied to—was that last one already stated? Well, it bears repeating.

The most recent Bush decision to commute Lewis “Scooter” Libby's prison sentence (imposed because he lied under oath during the investigation of the CIA Plame leak case) definitely is a miscarriage of justice and a slap in the face of the American people. The most powerful appear to have their own set of rules and laws.

In addition, American civil liberties have been cast aside in an attempt to quash any subversive and/or contrary opinion of the administration, e.g., government “eavesdropping” via the Internet and telephones. It has been revealed that Bush, like Nixon four decades ago, has carried out an illegal wiretapping program against the people of this country. These are serious offenses which constitute High Crimes and Misdemeanors.

Whether or not, as Pelosi says, impeachment won’t succeed almost is immaterial. The more important priority is to document the current administration’s actions for the public record.
Impeachment proceedings are the only way to hold Bush and Cheney accountable to the American people. Whether or not, as Pelosi says, impeachment won’t succeed almost is immaterial. The more important priority is to document the current administration’s actions for the public record and the history books; otherwise, where is the record of all their lies, deceptions and disingenuous rhetoric.

Wasn’t it President Harry S. Truman who had a desk sign that stated, “The Buck Stops Here!”? These days our leaders prefer to point their fingers at others, unwilling to demand accountability or accept responsibility. The American people deserve better.

2. AMEN. Document the crimes for history
The $500 million Bush library is going to be a think tank of people writing books and articles telling how wonderful Bush was. It's important to have the facts on the record.

5. K&R, "Priority" is the key word...
unfortunately Democratic leaders are not only ignoring the will of the people, they are ignoring the forest for the trees. There is a massive wildfire burning down this forest and unless we focus on this matter now, saving a few trees won't matter in the end.

9. I just watched it and they brought up some great points....
there's even a great way to sell this to Republicans - in that not going forward with impeachment would set precedents and provide future presidents with vastly increased power, including Democratic presidents. (That is, provided Bush doesn't establish himself as a permanant dictator, like Hitler did.)

11. I just watched it, too -- and consider it a great public service.
It made the case for impeachment clearly, concisely, and compellingly. I've been writing to Congress representatives since the show ended, telling them to get a copy of the show, watch it, and rewatch till they finally see what their duty is to the American people, our Constitution, and the future of the country.
