Conservative Christian group calls for Vitter resignation Will Menaker


As he remains in seclusion over an admission that he used a Washington escort service, Senator David Vitter (R-LA) is losing the support of his base.

Arguing for "intellectual consistency," the Louisiana-based group 'Christian Conservatives for Reform' have called on Senator Vitter to resign following revelations of his numerous trysts with DC escorts and frequent patronage of brothels.

The Rev. Grant Storms explained that, "when Bill Clinton fell...we said 'resign', when William Jefferson was indicted we said 'resign', now it's one of our people, and we need to be consistent and say, 'David, do the right thing and resign.'"

Vitter's office has said that he will be returning to Washington for votes in the Senate, but did not specify when we would be back. Although a colleague has been quoted as saying he would return as early as Tuesday.

resignation is that hypocrisy still unites them both.

I'm not buying that the fundie organizations have any moral authority in this matter at all. Vitter, whether I like him or not, was elected by voters in his state. Let them decide his fate.

The Democratic governor would first make an appointment, filling the seat until the 2008 election, unless Louisiana has different provisions for filling vacancies.

Hey, I can applaud them for their lack of hypocrisy, but shouldn't churches, as I'm sure the Rev. Grant Storms represents, be politically-free?

I think the IRS should look at Storms' "church." After all, if Vitter, a Republican, is one of "their people," then their tax-exempt status should be withdrawn.

I do believe that's one of the signs of the end-times. Time for the Rapture!

Added to say - being consistent at least in terms of extra-marital sex-having. Others pointed out: Clinton was legal; Vitter wasn't.

Still, kind of a big deal for the religious right, or at least a part of it. Baby steps.
