Wow, now these insidious commercials for Coke and Lipitor and Bud *really* look amazing

I don't really know why I did it.

I mean, my old TV was perfectly good and it was a big lumbering 27" CRT Toshiba that I really didn't watch all that much anyway, certainly no major TV buff and not much of a movie buff and, like any good American, most of the high-grade porn I watch I simply enjoy on this here computer monitor during, you know, calm and restorative breaks between difficult and deeply articulate columnal paragraphs. Like, um, this one.

So why I felt the need to sell my perfectly good lump of a TV to a former housemate and then swallow the red pill and sink a small mountain of cash into an enormous, glistening 46" Samsung LCD that weighs almost as much as my ex-girlfriend and blocks out the sun and will likely be obsolete by the time President Obama gives his first State of the Union address (prediction: optimistic, but overall, still pretty screwed) in order that I may be able to see -- what now? NASCAR? "Grey's Anatomy?" Reruns of "Scrubs" on WGN? -- from deep space and still not miss any major plot points, is a bit beyond me.

Check that: No it's not. I do know why I did it. I did it because, like any upstanding citizen, I was greedily sucked in by the potent gizmo fetishism that defines modern culture. I was willingly lured by the promise of large-scale dazzle and color and hope, of sheer overwhelming visceral gratification, by the idea of some sort of moderately appreciable home-theater bliss unencumbered by the fact that I'd rather read a good magazine and listen to the new Dephazz and sip Ardbeg 10 in the tub while dreaming about owning an iPhone than suffer through one single second of, say, "America's Got Talent." Note: I might also be completely lying. Because I do sort of enjoy "Scrubs." ...
