Gen Wayne Downing (Ret), NBC analyst dead at 67

Just announced on MSNBC, he died at home in Peoria, IL. he was the top dog in Special Forces and served for a time in bush's white house early in the 'war on terror'.

Most recently he was a military analyst for NBC and MSNBC. My recollection of him is that he was not very complimentary of the running of the war or of Rummy.

1. He's almost got more bling on his uniform than Petraus. Omar Bradley didn't have half that bling.

2. Makes sense ...... he was your basic warrior's warrior
He was never a pencil neck. He was the first overall special forces commander and was always pretty much part of that side of the military. That tends to add the bling, especially in the form of campaign ribbons, since you get those even for some undeclared, low level conflicts, I think.

9. My recollection is that he was tied in with the Iraqi National Congress, Ahmed
Chalabi's exile group, maybe as a lobbyist?

And I remember his being more of a cheerleader for the war than some of the other MSNBC generals.

10. Yes. The Downing Plan
http://www.globalsecurity.org/military/ops/iraq-downing.htm

Following the 11 September 2001 terrorist attacks, and the quick success of Operation Enduring Freedom in Afghanistan, the INC plan was modified. The new plan was developed with the help of a retired four-star Army general, Wayne Downing , and former CIA officer Duane (Dewey) Clarridge, who have served as unpaid consultants to the INC. Clarridge ran the U.S.-backed contras who fought the leftist Sandanista regime in Nicaragua during the Reagan administration. Downing was appointed by President Bush in October 2001 to be the deputy national-security adviser for combatting terrorism. General Downing resigned in July 2002, reportedly frustrated by the administration's lack of action against Iraq.
