National Security Presidential Directive 51. Holy Cow!
I'm watching a 10 minute clip from a recent C-span WJ segment.
Brian interviews Jerome Corsi, a columnist for WorldNet Daily, no less.
Not exactly a flaming liberal.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9pd4yJdU1go

Does everybody already know about this?
It sounds like the rawest of power grabs.
In the case of a "national emergency", declared BY the president, the president takes charge of all state, local, tribal, and anything-else-he-can think-of-governments, AND "private agencies".
Can you say "Complete and Total Dictator"?

Take a look.
:scared:

it's just because he doesn't want to...

6. And this usurped power passes directly to the next president
If there is no impeachment. Republicans really might want to consider that. Although I suppose they'll be all for impeachment then. They've put party over country. They are all criminals now.

14. Which Army?
He's got his own private (can you say "Blackwater"?) army at his command. He's got a whole subset of government that pays obeisance to him.

And he's had the laws "adjusted" to allow him to declare martial law at essentially the drop of his hat.

What else does he lack?

18. If the US army can't subdue Iraq, how the hell could blackwater subdue the US?
It can't.

21. It doesn't have to "subdue" the U.S.
And the difference between Iraq and the U.S. is:
  1. There is no armed insurgency;
  2. Very few "ordinary" Americans could build IEDs;
  3. Very few Americans own automatic weapons like the AK-47;
  4. Many Americans would go along with the new dictatorship;
  5. Resistance would be localized, not widespread;
  6. The mercenaries would be fluent in the language;
  7. The government's propaganda would be much more effective, as most Americans would want to believe the best;
  8. Simply turning off utilities would render many Americans helpless.

23. I don't think so
1. There is no armed insurgency;
- There would be if blackwater tried it
2. Very few "ordinary" Americans could build IEDs;
- Oh, you'd be surprised on that one.
3. Very few Americans own automatic weapons like the AK-47;
- Again, you'd be surprised on that one. And as soon as someone tried something like that, the guns would flow in. Oh, how the guns would flow in.
4. Many Americans would go along with the new dictatorship;
- enough would not
5. Resistance would be localized, not widespread;
- ORLY?
6. The mercenaries would be fluent in the language;
- True, but they would say all the wrong things.
7. The government's propaganda would be much more effective, as most Americans would want to believe the best
- This is a valid point, and the propaganda would work for a while. But as things got worse, that would no longer be true
8. Simply turning off utilities would render many Americans helpless.
- Very true. But it would not render helpless the ones the government need worry about.

25. the continuity directive allows for control of all governmental entities
by the president.

this includes local and state police forces which are largely militarized now and very cohesive entities by definition.

power loves more power. especially near absolute power.

Edited on Wed Jul-18-07 02:32 PM by DemocratSinceBirth
If Bush imposed martial law the first thing to be harmed would be commerce... It would come to a virtual halt and they would turn against him...

7. We're a monarchy again
He destroyed our Constitution and repealed the revolution. We have King George again.
That's all there is to it. Bush may as well have gone back to 1776 and put a
bullet in the heads of Ben Franklin, John Adams and Thomas Jefferson.

8. I received a reply from my congressman John Tierney on
June 11 in response to my e-mail concerning the war and about this Security Directive issue. The following is part of his letter to me regarding the Directive:

Regarding the National Security Presidential Directive 51 and Homeland Security Presidential Directive 20, I think your correspondence raises some serious questions, and I have inquired with the House Committee on Homeland Security as to any plans for congressional oversight on the matter. Unfortunately, to date, I have not received a response. Be assured I will keep you updated should I learn anything further on the matter. In the meantime, I continue to monitor the issue closely.

Thank you for taking the time to contact me. Please feel free to do so regarding any matter of concern to you.

Sincerely,

John F. Tierney
Member of Congress

when did you ever hear about it on the news?

a google search of news sources reveals two hits from a st. cloud newspaper and a newspaper in albany buried in the comment section of "editor's mailbag".

on the cspan piece, they show it was buried in the washington post.
