No Up or Down for Mitch McConnell: "It is in the best interest of the Senate to Require 60 Votes"
Unless that is, the Repubs are in the majority and the Dem minority requires 60 votes. Then they cry for an "up or down vote" and chastize the evil Dems for requiring 60 votes for passage.
2. It is a historical option for a minority party to require 60 votes for passage
of an amendment. This allows for the minority to exercise some amount of power in the Senate.
What's funny as hell is that during Bush's supreme court nominations, conservatives were whipped into a fury by those mean liberals who refused an up or down vote. Conservatives cried out to their constituents to force an up or down vote from the Dem minority.
Now the table is turned and the Repubs are the ones requiring 60 votes. So much for their up or down bs!
