Young On Illegal Contributions: You Caught Me Too Late!
By Laura McGann - July 18, 2007, 12:32 PM

Rep. Don Young (R-AK), doing his part to keep Alaska at the vanguard of ethical blight, isn't saying he shouldn't have taken illegal contributions from the seafood industry -- just that it's too late to make him give it all back.

From Roll Call (sub req):

Rep. Don Young (R-Alaska) has acknowledged taking more than $5,500 in illegal campaign contributions from a seafood trade association since 2001, but he has informed federal officials he will only pay back a portion of those funds because some of the violations fall outside the statute of limitations for campaign finance violations.

Way to err on the side of ethical.

1. He's a peach, isn't he?
On the brighter side, he's at least proof that all the really slimy pols aren't in Georgia. Makes me feel a bit better, somehow.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I looked through several of the pages on his site, and NOWHERE does it list his party affiliation. Maybe I missed it? I just figure that they went through and scrubbed his site, maybe? But why the "D" in the google listing? Just another "mistake" like they do on the news all the time??

5. Good catch.
I wonder if there's any kind of tech person on Capitol Hill who we can contact regarding this, like a webmaster for .gov sites.

9. It's gotta be in the meta tags, because it sure as hell doesn't say that
on the site anywhere that I saw. I'll have to pull it back up and check the source on it...

6. Believe me, he's as Republican as they get.
And he's as corrupt as they come. An article in this morning's newspaper documented how he (or his campaign) has spent more on attorney's fees this year than any other sitting representative. He's slime.

12. I don't know.
We had him on the run last time with our very wonderful candidate Diane Benson, but she had no national support because the DCCC pretty much wrote her off since Don's been in office since 1972 and they assumed he couldn't be beaten. Even with only grassroots support and small contributions (compared to Don's millions in his campaign warchest, most of which came from Outside corporate contributions), she still got over 40 percent of the vote.

This time around, the national dems have been seriously courting our mayor Mark Begich and also former state representative Ethan Berkowitz, both of whom would be excellent candidates, although my heart and support is still with Diane, who has already declared.

Much has changed in Alaska since 2006 with four former and current state (R.) lawmakers having been indicted (one of whom has been convicted now) and continuing investigations of Young, Ted Stevens and Stevens' son Ben, former state senate president. Our new governor, Sarah Palin, although a Republican, ran on an ethics platform and so far has been doing a pretty good job, so things may be looking up here.
