Another reason to start bringing troops home ASAP
If we have to wait until the next presidential administration before withdrawing troops, then it will until 2011 before this Iraq experience is finished. Pentagon officials now say it will take as many as two years to withdraw all personnel and equipment from Iraq:

.............................

Iraq pullout would take up to two years: US officials

Washington, AFP:

"It would likely take over two years if we were told to bring most of our equipment out, and also close bases in an orderly process, (and) turn them over to the Iraqis," said one defence official.

As Congress debates the possible withdrawal of US forces from Iraq, the US military has begun to seriously study what that might involve. Defence officials say a pullout won't be quick or easy.

"If we were to come out quickly, it would take upwards of nine months," said one defence official, on condition of anonymity. That assumes US forces would leave most of their equipment behind, he added.

"It would likely take over two years if we were told to bring most of our equipment out, and also close bases in an orderly process, (and) turn them over to the Iraqis," he said.

1. I heard the two year thing and I thought it seemed way too long
Remember the Marshall Plan? Didn't the US move millions of pounds of food and equipment in months? Where is the mobility of the army that we always hear of? I was surprized too about how long it took to get the "surge" soldiers in place. They took months to get 30 thousand troops to Iraq. I think the troops could all be home in weeks.

3. And another kicker is the Def App Bill amendment wouldn't take effect
until October. Troop withdrawal beginning 120 days after that would make it around February 2008, presuming Bush even signed the bill or just let it go into law without signing it. There's no way they can comply with the law and get them drawn down by March, April, May (or whatever date they finalize in Conference).

PLUS, there will still be troops there. From the little bit I've read on the Bill, it sounds like it's an exit, but in reality it's a change in mission. Unless Congress wants to limit the number of troops (which they won't do), or pull funding (which they won't do)...we're there forever. Welcome to the Republic of Iraq, Territorial Province of the United States!

6. what a joke
http://www.fcnl.org/iraq/bases.htm

If the U.S. is ultimately leaving Iraq, why is the military building 'permanent' bases?
