Is this NYC steam explosion really such a big deal that
MSNBC feels it needs to conduct non-stop live coverage?

I mean, not to downplay it, but who cares unless you live there?

I'm far more interested in watching Hardball to hear about the overnight session.

Instead, we get a bunch of babbling from reporters.

I get it. There was a steam explosion. Enough. :eyes:

Heck if corporate newscasters can't find something that suits their liking to report on then they will just make something up. After all, it's only there to sell advertisement anyway, anybody that thinks they might learn something important tuning into corporate news is obviously sleep walking

Rescue workers are at jeopardy when dealing with asbestos if they aren't given the proper protection.

The EPA is testing now for asbestos.

I think that when anything happens in DC, LA, or NYC, a lot of Americans care about it. (I'm watching local coverage, though.)

What I'm complaining about is the extended coverage.

Both CNN and Faux are not still live.

Local news is covering it, of course. Right now they have a "steam expert" on the line, if you can believe that.

Anyway, at least it was nothing serious. At the time, it was a little frightening because all you could hear from the higher floors was loud, constant rumbling coming from below, where Grand Central is, and a lot of deep, black smoke billowing out and people running away from the area. So people were pretty panicked at first, because it sounded like it could be concrete breaking down.

This story has all the elements of an all day thing though. It has the words "explosion" and "New York" in the headline, and it has footage that they can run in a loop ad infinitum.

Just like when that one baseball player crashed his airplane. If it had been anywhere else in the country it would have been a two minute blip during commercials, but you throw those elements together and it trumps anything that happened anywhere else in the world.

41st and Lexington is steps away from Grand Central Station, one of the major transport hubs for the NYC Metropolitan Area. Metro North commuter lines and NYC Subway lines have been disrupted, and it's uncertain how soon services, including water, will be restored, and there will in all likelihood be some business/employment disruptions, including low-paid service people whose livelihoods depend on the office workers in the area.

This isn't a little thing that'll be cleared up in a few hours and life will go back to normal that fast.

One person is dead, several injured; those numbers may change. There may have been absestos released in the steam cloud. A lot of unknowns at the moment; tomorrow may bring more details.

47. It was damn scary
I was walking down Lexington and saw the explosion. It looked like a replay of 9/11, with thousands of people running away while the intense geyser of smoke and vapor erupted in the background. "Run!" people were screaming. "Run!" An older lady slipped and fell to the ground. I didn't want to be in the open air and slipped into a gym near Grand Central. The stream of people running out of Grand Central and away from the explosion continued. A voice came over the intercom, "We are evacuating this building" and sweats-clad patrons ran out of the gym.

I went back to work and watched as the plume of steam billowed up the side of the Chrysler Building, reaching its full height at times.

Later, when I went back home, I saw thousands of tourists, New Yorkers and media lining the streets, looking down towards the explosion.
There were dozens, perhaps hundreds, of emergency vehicles and police cars in the area.

Mayor Bloomberg has announced they are testing for asbestos. He seems far more transparent than Giuliani.

the live coverage.

Stay on the air for an hour.

I'm questioning the rationale of staying on the air for longer than that.

I live 3,000 miles away.

Everything that could be said about that breaking news story had been reported, IMO.

CNN and FOX were able to see that, and switched back to normal programming as I thought MSNBC should have done.

As for me, I called a sister who works in the area (she is home safe), then I watched the coverage (not on MSNBC) until the Mayor said his piece. I don't know if they covered much after that, and then Keith was on.
