Hummer Owner Gets Angry Message
Vandals Batter D.C. Man's SUV, Slash Its Tires and Scratch In an Eco Note

By Allison Klein
Washington Post Staff Writer
Wednesday, July 18, 2007; Page B01

On a narrow, leafy street in Northwest Washington, where Prius hybrid cars and Volvos are the norm, one man bought a flashy gray Hummer that was too massive to fit in his garage.

So he parked the seven-foot-tall behemoth on the street in front of his house and smiled politely when his eco-friendly neighbors looked on in disapproval at his "dream car."

It lasted five days on the street before two masked men took a bat to every window, a knife to each 38-inch tire and scratched into the body: "FOR THE ENVIRON."

"The thought of somebody vandalizing it never crossed my mind," said Gareth Groves, 32, who lives with his mother in a three-story home in the 4300 block of Brandywine Street NW in American University Park. "I've kind of been in shock."

Now, as Groves ponders what to do with the remains of his $38,000 SUV, he has been the target of a number of people who have driven by the crime scene in his upscale neighborhood and glared at him in smug satisfaction.

"I'd say one in five people who come by have that 'you-got-what-you-deserve' look," said his friend Andy Sexton, 27, who is visiting from Arkansas and has been helping Groves deal with fallout from the crime.

8. Agreed. I can think of about a hundred better ways to help the environment
than vandalizing some guy's car, regardless of the type of car it happens to be.

25. I agree
He may have been a self important un-eco friendly ass, but that's just bullshit!
This kind of "Eco terrorism" is really unacceptable. We have to stop the thugs
on our side of the isle (as it were) from thinking this kind of abuse

4. 1. "flashy" gray? 2. only $38K?
I feel bad for the guy, what a way to learn to love your neighbor.

Our hummer dealership closed down and moved away.

They had two fires I think in the last few years, due to vandals, and at one point the dealership put police motorcycles in the window like a scarecrow. I wish I bothered to take a picture.

What is he doing with a Hummer and he still lives with his mother?

9. Maybe his mother needs 24 hour care, and his siblings don't have the
time to be there. On the other hand, maybe he's a right-wing blogger and he got the hummer cheap with the tax break.

11. A great Simpsons episode
features the "Canyonero", a Mack-truck-sized SUV. The end of the episode is an entire commercial for the Canyonero, and features, among other scenes, the Canyonero shoving a schoolbus full of boyscouts off the road (the scouts promptly salute it), then the Canyonero drives through an american flag, which bursts into flames.

The lyrics:

Can you name the truck with four wheel drive,
smells like a steak and seats thirty-five..

Canyonero! Canyonero!

Well, it goes real slow with the hammer down,
It's the country-fried truck endorsed by a clown!

Canyonero! (Yah!) Canyonero!
Hey Hey

The Federal Highway comission has ruled the
Canyonero unsafe for highway or city driving.

Canyonero!

12 yards long, 2 lanes wide,
65 tons of American Pride!

Canyonero! Canyonero!

Top of the line in utility sports,
Unexplained fires are a matter for the courts!

Canyonero! Canyonero! (Yah!)

She blinds everybody with her super high beams,
She's a squirrel crushing, deer smacking, driving machine!

Canyonero!-oh woah, Canyonero! (Yah!)

Drive Canyonero!

Woah Canyonero!

Woah!

Just a thought...

Seems to dovetail conveniently with Glenn's "You liberals want to execute us GW skeptics" message...

16. Think about it...you vandalize an expensive car in an upscale neighborhood...
and then you take the time to scratch a message into the side of the vehicle....

An upscale neighborhood where cars are normally parked in garages, but this one is in-your-face parked on the street..

19. This story ties in too neatly to the "eco-terrorist" meme the RWers are so fond of. Eco-

conscious people I've known are all about educating others about how to reduce consumption, and starting local intiatives for recycling (beyond what may be offered by the community). Eco-conscious types are generally incredibly peaceful people. And yeah, bashing the windows of the vehicle didn't arouse the nabe? And there's time to scratch a message on the Hummer?

17. I don't agree with vandalizing cars.
You never know it could be a necessity. The guy might need a large truck for towing in his line of work.

21. What a completely Biased story. Crappy reporting.
"what to do with the remains of his $38,000 SUV"

So a Hummer with Broken windows and popped tires is a total loss? No wonder we are loosing in Iraq. Are you saying all Hummers need to be recalled Quick?

"I'd say one in five people who come by have that 'you-got-what-you-deserve' look,"

So the reporter thinks that this guy from Arkansas can read the minds of people he has never met in a town he doesn't live in? And since when is 20% a significant amount of the public?

And also where is hell are Volvos and Prius' the norm? I don't even see that in Berkley or Ann Arbor or Burlington. The reporter is just trying to feed stereotypes with this shittty story.

But it might be a touch cynical to presume it here.

Now, if the H2 had been covered in dog feces and a trash bag...
