31. The sad thing is, early in his career he was one of the best players in the game
He could field, hit, steal bases and hit homeruns. He was a Hall of Famer before he roided up.

He screwed up big time if you ask me.

Since Bonds is the only player that can be even compete with Ruth for the title of greatest of all time (from a statistical analysis point of view).

15. It's too bad that baseball's greatest record is under such a cloud.
Personally,I think Bonds has been totally roided up,but I don't know what MLB can really do.If they take away his numbers it also affects all the players that he batted in,etc..That's not fair to those guys. Why should their numbers suffer?

It's also clear he isn't the only one guilty here, even now. There are substances that can't be detected that are still being used.I think MLB's best hope is that this will looked back upon like the "dead ball" era is today.

I would, however, love nothing more than to see Bonds hit the record setter and have the crowd turn their backs on him as he runs the bases.

51. Greatest record?
This record will be broken by A-rod in a few years.

But what about Ty Cobb's lifetime batting average of .366? Or Cy Young's 749 complete games? Nolan Ryan's 7 no-hitters? Even Cal Ripken's record will last much, much longer (probably forever) than Bary Bond's.

It's an accomplishment, but by no means the greatest record.

58. Nothing at all against what you mentioned, but the Home Run record is the Holy Grail of baseball.
Just ask Hank Aaron or Babe Ruth. :)

Different eras lead to a lot of talk about which was better or which one wasn't,but the home run record has always been the standard, and will be long after we're gone.Whether that's the right standard or not is up for debate (I like Cy Young's numbers myself).

I wont argue that each of the players you mention deserves mega credit for said accomplishments, but the Home Run record is where's it's at.

27. That's not the point to me
It's breaking the record.

I'm personally unclear if Robinson is actually known to use steroids, uses something like Creatine and protein supplements or people just figure that someone that's got the tree-stump forearms like he's got has to be on steroids. So the I don't consider the steroids an issue... until I'm shown something conclusively different.

43. Is not evidence of guilt
I think he took 'roids...I just have "justice" issues. I think MLB has to make the charge. I think there needs to be proof... I think he needs to be suspended.

But here is the thing.

under the present rules he would get a ten day suspenson for a first offense or whatever.

He may well have been usiong a concoction that was suspect but no not legal..

I just thnk the case has to mafe by MLB before you put an astrisk by the Record.

26. It seems to be shaping up as a big non-event..but here is the thing.
And the huge question. If he was doping ( I suspect he was), but what he was using was not illegal when he was doing it, is he still a cheat?

And if he is a cheat for doiing this...How is he really any different than Gaylord Perry who is in the HOF and was an admitted cheat?

Finally, unless MLB charges him and goes through some sort of judicial process, is it "justice" to give him an asterisk?

where is the suspension. And he has never been found with roids in his sytem. If he failed a drug test I would completely agree. but he has not.

41. Exactly! He never failed one of baseball's drug tests
Hell, I'm a fan of baseball, but the old timers were speeding, who knows what records were set by guys on "uppers" and comparing eras is a fools dream anyway...Babe hit in an era that could have been called the dead arm era...rotations were 4, not 5 pitchers and almost every game was a full 9 innings (for that matter, Aaron played many years with that)...pitchers paced themselves or got torched in the late innings, either way, it was a drastic change when relievers and 5 man rotations came in...so much so that they finally had to lower the mound a few inches because pitchers were too dominant.
The only comparisons that really stand up are how these guys stand along their peers. I've always felt the Babe was a mythical being, but at the same time I doubt he'd even make a major league roster today. Aaron, he'd play today, but no one can guess if he'd hit as many, more, or less homers.
The point is, Bonds has been a superb player for a long time, there is no one playing right now that has his resume. Put an asterisk by his name if you must, but better put one by everyone else too (played in amphetamine era...hit .450 against pitchers with more than 8 innings pitched...etc. etc.)
