West Hollywood votes to impeach Bush and Cheney

~snip~ West Hollywood was the 80th city or township in the nation to pass such a declaration, following similar actions in Michigan, Ohio and Vermont as well as six cities in Northern California, including Arcada and Eureka.

Citing perceived abuses of power and constitutional transgressions, such as domestic wiretapping and torture at Abu Ghraib and Guantanamo Bay, the City Council passed the resolution unanimously Monday.

Mayor John J. Duran said he thought it was his civic responsibility to hold elected officials responsible for what he called egregious crimes.

"Someday I know I'll look back and I'll be satisfied that when I thought the Constitution was in peril, I took some action rather than just sat passively by," Duran said. ~snip~

Pelosi also reiterated Saturday that she would not engage in what would perhaps be the biggest confrontation possible with the White House -- seeking the impeachment of Bush over the Iraq war.

If Madame will not listen to a groundswell, we need to demand that she step down as speaker or remove her if she won't. Then we need to install a new speaker who is strong and will save our country. By not following our Constitution, Pelosi is being un-American. We can no longer stand for this.

Pelosi may get competent political advice, not only regarding what fraction of the public currently supports impeachment but also regarding the possible organizing opportunities that a doomed-to-fail impeachment effort might offer Republicans
