Washington Journal This Morning On Executive Privilege
This morning's opening subject on Washington Journal asked how listeners felt about Bush's claim of extraordinary executive privilege in the matter of the US Attorney firings. Not one caller seemed to understand the issues at hand and surprisingly for a President who is enjoying among the lowest approval ratings in our history many of the callers favored his position.
So I just wanted to put the basic problem in a nutshell.
Every witness who has come before the Congress on this matter has claimed that the President has no involvement in this issue. The privilege Bush invokes exists so that he may have private discussions on official matters without those discussions being reveled to the public. In this case he invokes privilege to stop the people he didn't talk to from answering questions about conversations they all say didn't take place.
