Ringleader of GOP "Brooks Brothers Riot" admits to spouse abuse
Sweeney: Is the Party Finally Over?
God, I'd almost forgotten we don't have former Rep. John Sweeney (R-NY) to kick around any more. But I'm willing to make an exception. Sweeney was an Abramoff crony and the ringleader of the GOP "Brooks Brothers Riot" that helped shutdown the recount down in Florida in November 2000.

Sweeney, you'll remember, was defeated last year in a very close and hard-fought race against Kirsten Gillibrand. Just before the election a police report surfaced describing a 911 call Sweeney's wife had placed to police in the district after the congressman had apparently manhandled her during a domestic blow-up in their home. Sweeney rather unconvincingly challenged the authenticity of the report, calling it "fabricated" and "concocted" by the Gillibrand campaign. He later admitted something had happened. But he and his wife both refused to discuss details. Then they said they would authorize the police to release the report and then failed to do so.

Even though Sweeney gave his wife an illegal 10% cut of his fundraising take, the bloom is now officially off the Sweeney marriage. On Sunday, Gayle Sweeney, John's now estranged wife told the Albany Times-Union that he frequently verbally abused her, sometimes physically abused her and "coerced" her into issueing the denial she made with him just befor election day. In fact, if the phyiscal abuse was only occasional it was apparently pretty extreme because Gayle Sweeney says she is now in hiding, staying in undisclosed locations, because she fears for her life.

3. The divorce trial is being held in a neighboring county (NOT Saratoga Co)
...because the local judges recused themselves - HOWEVER, when Sweeney's 18-year-old son was charged with beating another kid so badly the other kid ended up in the hospital, the Saratoga Co judges had NO problem getting Sweeney's kid off the hook.:eyes:

Sweeney's a thug and a scumbag - I'm sooooooo glad that we got rid of his drunk-ass back in November!

14. Key here
http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/articles/A31074-2005Jan23.html

Matt Schlapp, No. 6, a former House aide and then a Bush campaign aide, has risen to be White House political director. Garry Malphrus, No. 2 in the photo, a former staff director of the Senate Judiciary subcommittee on criminal justice, is now deputy director of the White House Domestic Policy Council. And Rory Cooper, No. 3, who was at the National Republican Congressional Committee, later worked at the White House Homeland Security Council and was seen last week working for the Presidential Inaugural Committee.

Here's what some of the others went on to do:

No. 1. Tom Pyle, who had worked for Rep. Tom DeLay (R-Tex.), went private sector a few months later, getting a job as director of federal affairs for Koch Industries.

No. 7. Roger Morse, another House aide, moved on to the law and lobbying firm Preston Gates Ellis & Rouvelas Meeds. "I was also privileged to lead a team of Republicans to Florida to help in the recount fight," he told a legal trade magazine in a 2003 interview.

No. 8. Duane Gibson, an aide on the House Resources Committee, was a solo lobbyist and formerly with the Greenberg Traurig lobby operation. He is now with the Livingston Group as a consultant.

No. 9. Chuck Royal was and still is a legislative assistant to Sen. Jim DeMint (R-S.C.), a former House member.

No. 10. Layna McConkey Peltier, who had been a Senate and House aide and was at Steelman Health Strategies during the effort, is now at Capital Health Group.

(We couldn't find No. 4, Kevin Smith, a former GOP House aide who later worked with Voter.com, or No. 5, Steven Brophy, a former GOP Senate aide and then at consulting firm KPMG.

I don't think any representatives were there at the riot. However, they were probably waiting at the hotel for the Thanksgiving dinner

19. "if the phyiscal abuse was *only* occasional"???
Edited on Thu Jul-26-07 08:38 AM by Triana
So. If a jerk beats his wife to smithereens only once a year as opposed to twice a year that makes it somehow 'better' or 'OK'? It doesn't matter HOW frequent it was. If it happened ONCE then it happened too often. There is no 'matter of degrees' when it comes to this.

The verbal and emotional abuse Mrs. Sweeney suffered will undoubtedly take longer to heal from than the physical - however that remark "only occasional" is despicable.

GOD I cannot believe the ACCEPTANCE of spousal abuse that this society promotes.
