18. Thanks to all responding. My issues so far:
Been dumped offline 6 times in the last two hours, slow internet, no ability to even go into wikipedia to research a simple item. I am on a cable modem. When I call my local server: Advanced Stream I get a messege inregards to their problem with a secondary telephone number. When I call that other number the techie who answeres claims the problem is nationwide. For what it is worth I have been having this very difficulty for almost a month now. Advanced Stream says that the problem may be on my end and are looking into it... I think someone is feeding me a bunch of balony. BTW I got dumped again right after I posted this thread and it took almost 5 minutes to even get back here...I hope spelling is OK...DU's "Spell Check" does not even work anymore for me...grr grrr

28. Hey, I thought I was the chicken little around here...
...although you may be on to something. For what it is worth my problems began over a month ago right here in the DU while writing a lengthy piece about impeaching bush. I have wondered if someone here may have slipped me a nasty bug. I have not attempted to write anything of that length since. I never know if this computor will stay online for five minutes since that day. My service providor may be full of crap too and are simply not fessing up to internal problems...hence my post

55. I've found my problem...see post #53 below
Cable provider, not internet service provider is my problem today. Signing off here and now though, as it stands it takes me an average of 4 minutes just to open anything here in the DU. I'll be back later when (hopefully) cable provider fixes problem. For what it is worth I am also exploring the possibility that I picked up a bug here, (maybe in DU), sometime last month too. This is separate from todays problems but are quite similar. Constant random dumping offline-funny lines running across my screen partially blocking my view, screen freezing and causing an involuntary restart procedure are part of my "other" problem which will get addressed in the future.

This is a tin foil hat notion on my part but I wonder if someone here took direct action to counter my line of reasoning for bush impeachment. Nobody was able to counter my reason and I may have actually converted a few from the anti-impeachment set when "BAM!!!" -I could no longer stay online with any regularity. I was about to post a new anti impeachment thread...worked for 4 hours on it only to have it dumped! Not sure if it is even possible to sabotage a fellow DUer in this way but if it were I would not put it past some folks to do so. (Especially the bush crowd who ghost through the DU to glean what ever they may for their nefarious purposes). I only mention this in case you might have contracted this "bug" as well. More than likely it is just my paranoia showing through and our problems are unrelated.

...ok 4 minutes through spell check and then 4 minutes to post this...

37. No problem in Fairbanks, Alaska -
I'm on DSL, but my server rarely has problems. When I was on dial-up, the problems came when a fiber optic cable would go down or be cut by a ship's rudder - then we bounce off satellite! (Also plays hell with basic long distance calls, credit card machines etc.)

38. A BIG THANK YOU to EVERYONE who has responded
The jury is out on the nationwide problem as a few who responded here HAVE had problems too.
For me I have now been dumped offline a grand total of 5 times since I first posted this thread. I have a cable modem yet my service is VERY slow...spell check takes up to 2-3 minutes for the window to open and an additional minute for the spell check to actually start working. (Sometimes I don't even get a spell check window at all just a struggling load bar which dies out before it gets even half way there only to be replaced with the "Could not locate" page...I get that same thing when I try to access Wikipedia as well). My service provider: Advanced Stream claims that this is a nationwide problem and should be cleared up soon. I do not know what to think, in that I have had this problem for about 30 days now! c

45. Perhaps...I am up to being dumped 6 times since first posting...
...this thread and there are at least 2 others here who have had problems. I confess that with the preponderance of "No Problems Here" that this thread has generated lends credibility to my suspicions that my problems may be with my service provider after all.

ps: spell check worked normal for me that time...it has been slow and not at all for the last few hours. This is a step forward for me at least.

48. Great link bookmarked thanks...
...Here is my dilemma: I have been with Advanced Stream for about 3 months. I have a cable modem. About a month or so ago I had so much problems with slow internet, being dumped and strange lines running across the page that I sent my computer out for repairs. It came back with an upgraded system, (Windows XP replaced Windows 2000). The problems GOT WORSE. I called Advanced Stream (OFTEN). They ended up severing my connection for awhile because I had not paid my bill. (They never sent me a bill)...we discussed this and I told them to mail me a bill and that I was done with their service...they called me back and offered to fix my computer problems and apologized for not sending me a bill. They researched my online difficulties and we tried switching modems. This has not worked. Today I have been dumped offline since 6:30am pst a grand total of 11 times...it is 1:30pm here now. When I call advance stream I get an automated message that they are currently having problems and it should be fixed shortly. When I call their tech support number I am told that the problem is nationwide. So what is the real problem? I am completely baffled. MY thread here indicates my problem is likely local. My question is: Is it me or is it my service provider Advanced Stream?

51. From your description I'm pretty sure it is your cable service,
Cable broadband (somewhat more so than DSL) is very dependent on the company continually expanding their capacity as demand rises, and most won't lay out the cash to keep up, and because of the way cable works, well, you've experienced the results.

The best solution, if it is available, is to use a T-1 fiber optic connection. The biggest problem there is the cost. If the cable is new to the area, it can get pretty expensive, but as the system matures and more people use it the costs come down dramatically ($20 bucks a month), making directly competitive with the alternatives.

Oh yes, one other thing that could be a source of problems, do you use a wireless network in your house? If so, it could be your router.

BTW, forget the satellite broadband sold by DirecTV (maybe Dish too), the increased lag eliminates the gain in speed, plus it is very expensive.

57. It was cable provider
See my response #53 I DO have other online issues though and after talking them through with my cable provider's tech crew they have suggested that my internet provider needs to send out a tech to figure out where my other problems are coming from... I will follow that recommendation after my cable provider gets their end fixed. (No I am not on wireless...just plain ol' citywide cable as provided by the Click Network)

53. AHA!!! PROBLEM FOUND
My local service provider is a subcontractor who subcontracts through my local cable service. I called that cable service and lo and behold: They DO have a problem. Apparently they tried to upgrade their system and the upgrade has not functioned well. It IS being worked on and they promise to have our internet access back up to normal shortly. In the meanwhile I can expect slow service, constant dumps offline and an inability to load certain web pages! I still have more problems than that though. After the cable service gets it's problems fixed I still get to chat with my local internet service provider and work on getting those other problems resolved.
In the meanwhile I think I'll have to go offline for awhile...got me a new video game I've been meaning to try. Thank you to all who posted in this thread...

Good news is that my internet access is not affected.
