On background, I literally grew up at the Space Center. Cocoa Beach. My stepfather and two of my brothers-in-law are "rocket scientists." I've been in the VAB and the concrete blockhouses. When I was a kid, several of my friends got summer jobs gluing heat tiles to the Space Shuttle. So, I'm not speaking as an outsider.

That said...if you're gonna strap a rocket to my ass and send me into space, at least give me good, deep bong hit.

6. You know what's funny?
The "I Dream Of Jeanie" cast made an appearance in Cocoa Beach when I was a kid. I went to see it, of course. A full-on ticker-tape parade. But what's odd is there was never a similar parade for the REAL astronauts. The real ones were included as props in the "IDOJ" show, but man, we freaked out when Barbara Edan showed up at Town Hall.

Weird shit. This is a seriously fucked up country. And it's been fucked up longer than we'd like to believe.

My wife works for
NASA, and nary a negative word leaves my lips about the organization, but I wouldn't anyway. I appreciate the work they do. I'd rather fund them then kill innocent Iraqis. I've met a few astronauts and on station, they are held in high esteem.

3. Back in the days of "spam in a can" I'll bet those guys drank too!

When Yeager broke the sound barrier he was hung over and had a broken rib. He was riding a horse with Poncho Barns at the Happy Bottom Riding Club and ran into a low hanging tree branch the night before.

Poncho, "Well you got your test pilots and you got your pud knockers. What do you pud knockers want to drink?"

I read that the X-15 pilots raced their cars to the bar at Rosamund many times just before and after the test flights.

11. Read some books about the X-15 program. Very interesting too I think.

They are putting together a museum as a tribute to Poncho Barns in California City. That would be interesting to see too!

4. They let summer job kids glue things to the space shuttle?

Good Lord, no wonder those tiles are always flying off.

9. Isn't that bizarre?
This November is my 30th high school reunion. Two of my hs buddies were tile gluers. It was better than working at the "Moon Hut" (a local tourist trap burger joint). I'll be discussing this at the reunion, guaranteed.

Edited on Thu Jul-26-07 04:46 PM by A HERETIC I AM
something to the effect:

"Here i am, sitting on top of several hundred thousand pounds of high explosives, packed into a device made by the lowest bidder on a government contract and the next nearest person is 2 miles away!"
