I just lost my Aunt & Uncle .... real Christians
No pity both had long and very productive lives
She was 75 (died in June) He was 80 and passed today.

Uncle John was an Episcopalian Rector in a small town in S.W. Ohio.

Both he and my Aunt Jean did the following:

* Had their oldest son come out as gay and they were proud & loved him.
* Worked for Senior care .... meals on wheels, a nursing home, transportation issues, and hospice care.
* Mental health issues and care in the tri county area
* Helped a local community college
* Helped the local public school system
* Brought ALL local Churches into a program to help those in need.
* 4 Kids ... all College Grads.
* And were family to me.
* Ministered to and helped many generations.

Talking the talk is easy but walking the walk is so much more difficult. And walk the walk
they did.

Golden Slumbers
(John Lennon, Paul McCartney)
Lead Vocal: Paul McCartney

Once there was a way to get back homeward
Once there was a way to get back home
Sleep pretty darling do not cry
And I will sing a lullabye

Golden slumbers fill your eyes
Smiles awake you when you rise
Sleep pretty darling do not cry
And I will sing a lullabye

Once there was a way to get back homeward
Once there was a way to get back home
Sleep pretty darling do not cry
And I will sing a lullabye

6. Knowing that there are folks like that out there keeps me sane.
In a nation chock-full of hyenas and barracudas, people such as your aunt and uncle (and mine, as well) constantly renew what little is left of my faith in mankind.

Thanks for the reminder, Botany.

10. Christofascists would say they are going to hell because they didn't
stone the gays or bomb the women's clinics.

You and I know the truth.

13. Uncle John & Aunt Jean ....
.... thought the right wing "born again" types were really scary
and that their reading of the Bible was very selective.

Helping the sick & poor ... what does that have to do w/ Christ anyway?

18. REAL Christians don't do good deeds for personal accolades, but for the good of others.
Your aunt & uncle were true Christians. Selflessly giving of themselves for the betterment of the community as a whole. O8)

As opposed to these "Modern Christians" who only do things for show & to maintain their church's country club atmosphere, basically a bunch of hypocrites.

24. you are so lucky to have had them!!
You know how I know? I have an aunt and uncle that are almost clones of this--just Presbyterian instead of Episcopalian, and Michigan instead of Ohio. My aunt and uncle are STILL ALIVE, but about that same age........

Anyway, this is amazing, right down to the son being gay. They have been very active in allowing gays to be Presbyterian ministers.

I am so sorry for your loss and the world's loss. Thank you for posting this tribute to their lives.

You and I both are really fortunate to have these people in our lives. What a blessing my aunt and uncle have been to me. Actually, they are among the few Democrats in my family.

please don't tell the others. Especially the Wisconsin EDVs.

Uncle John's death was a surprise but not a shock. Really good people they were.

No real loss ... hurt yes ... but I gained so much from them.

29. I'm sorry about your loss.
Your aunt & uncle sound like they were wonderful people. And they walked the walk.

(On a side note, Paul pinched those lyrics from poet Thomas Dekker, 1572-1632:

Golden slumbers kiss your eyes;
smiles awake you when you rise.
Sleep pretty wantons, do not cry,
and I will sing a lullaby.
Rock them, rock them, lullaby.

Paul knew enough to borrow something 400 years old!)

38. Sorry for your loss. And yes, golden slumbers is a great song for those
passing on to the next world. I had a grandmother who told me her time was up and it was time to go..and lived for years blind/deaf/immobile for years after that. When I came across that beatles song during those years..I thought of her often. This was at a time when she was defiant and trying to starve herself. The song gave me great hope for the end to her suffering...that some day soon she would be free.

She was buried beside her husband in a beautiful country cemetery...50 years after he had passed away.

That song brings tears to my eyes today.

I'm glad your aunt and uncle lead such full lives and didn't suffer much.

Sorry for your loss.

45. Bless them. They remind me of my former in-laws, who died within a week of each other last summer.
The were married for 60 years, and I loved them unconditionally, even after their daughter and I divorced after 18 years in 1994. They were my daughter's grandparents, and I kept visiting them right up to a few months out of state before their deaths (hers by Alzheimers, slowly; his suddenly, by a stroke). I miss them to this day.

They were liberal Christians in every sense of the word. They believed this, which you never, ever find on any right wing website, but which is difficult for the Pat Robertsons of the world to get around:

"Blessed are the poor in spirit,
for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

Blessed are they who mourn,
for they shall be comforted.

Blessed are the meek,
for they shall inherit the earth.

Blessed are they who hunger and thirst for righteousness,
for they shall be satisfied.

Blessed are the merciful,
for they shall obtain mercy.

Blessed are the pure of heart,
for they shall see God.

Blessed are the peacemakers,
for they shall be called children of God.

Blessed are they who are persecuted for the sake of righteousness,
for theirs is the kingdom of heaven."

Gospel of Matthew 5:3-10
