Do we need a "Minneapolis Area DUers: CHECK IN!" thread?
If you're safe but someone might be worried and unable to get hold of you on the phone...
might be good to have some check in sites.

Anybody in the area know of a site we could suggest to people?

Good vibes to all in the area. Hope everybody hears from loved ones in the area.

2. We may need HS to get out and check up on the integrity of the
rest of the thousands of bridges right here in the "homeland". Last I heard, no bridges have collapsed in Iraq, due to terrorism or otherwise.

4. Expect much chatter about the need to turn roads over to private corporations
cuz the US can't afford to keep them maintained. Look for push for LOTS of roadways going toll.

They will make this a poster boy for more privatization.

Anybody? Peace vigils on a bridge on Wednesdays?

Edited to add: Spot on! Google is our friend (well, except for that bit of turning all our searches over to cheney)

http://www.google.com/search?q=Minneapolis++peace+vigils+%2B+bridge&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8&aq=t&rls=org.mozilla:en-US%20%3Cimg%20src=

first item on the google page: Every Wednesday there is a vigil at the Marshall-Lake Street Bridge at 4:30PM to oppose the war ... 1313 5th Street SE, Minneapolis, Minnesota ...

12. No, the Marshall-Lake St. bridge is down river a mile or so...
Luckily, the contsruction probably reduced the traffic at that time of day!

It's creepy when it happens in your backyard!!!

All my friends have checked in...

9. This is so weird!
I think it was yesterday I was watching a program and they were talking about all the bridges/overpasses in the U.S. that need to be checked out so that they don't collapse because of weather, weight or whatever. I think it was on the weather channel. And now today, this happens. Uncanny!

19. Is the River closed to Barge traffic?
Edited on Wed Aug-01-07 08:15 PM by bluedog
I read this from KOS........Is this the major route for barges and such?......

the poster said
River is now CLOSED to Barge traffic. Gas prices in Minneapolis/St Paul area are going up even as we speak. Large lines are forming at gas stations which will close and stay closed once they are drained.

any truth in this or has it not been noted in your area?

20. I haven't been listening to local TV or radio, just...
Edited on Wed Aug-01-07 08:31 PM by Eric J in MN
...looked at the Pioneer Press and Star Tribune websites for local news.

The bridge was on the Mississippi, and so I assume it's "the the major route for barges and such."

I haven't seen an announcement that barge traffic is closed, but that would make sense until the situation is stable.
