Leahy, once again, gives Gonzo another week to straighten out his testimony
Testimony Explanation, Leahy Says Not Good Enough
By Paul Kiel - August 1, 2007, 6:40 PM

Well, that long awaited clarification from Alberto Gonzales about his testimony last week has arrived. And as you'd expect, it follows the same line that Gonzales and the administration have been touting, most recently in the letter yesterday from Michael McConnell. We'll have more on Gonzales' parsing of the parsing tomorrow.

Here's what Sen. Patrick Leahy (D-VT) had to say after taking a gander:

“The Attorney General’s legalistic explanation of his misleading testimony under oath before the Senate Judiciary Committee last week is not what one should expect from the top law enforcement officer of the United States. It is time for full candor to enforce the law and promote justice, rather than word parsing.

“The Attorney General has until the end of this week to correct and supplement his testimony. I hope he will take that opportunity to clarify the many issues on which he appears not to have been forthcoming and to tell the Senate Judiciary Committee and the American people the whole truth.”

1. Will you just read down a bit in the comments?...
Posted with attribution and with extreme prejudice:

Senator Leahy said, all along, that the Attorney General had a week after his last testimony to correct his testimony. Senator Leahy is merely restating that fact, and not extending the time limits. Senator Arlen Specter was the one who set his own personal time limit on when he had to receive the letter. If you people are going to attack Senator Leahy, then at least get the facts right. You sound like a bunch of people who come across as being just as clueless as Gonzo, and overly eager to call Senator Leahy names, without having your facts in order.

6. Gonzales testified last Thursday
Gonzales testified last Thursday. His week is up at the latest, tomorrow afternoon. But, timing technicalities notwithstanding, how many cracks does he get at this? When I was in college I couldn't keep re-writing my papers until they passed the prof's muster.

I suppose Leahy is giving AG extra credit for turning his POS paper in early?

10. Leahy believes in due process as written in the Senate rules?
Nah! Can't be that. Can't be that...

It's got to be special treatment.

...Sigh.

12. More Time is needed
Gonzo needs more time to get his story straight and acceptable to Leahy, one that Leahy and the Dem's can accept,so if he does not get it right in a week,he will need to get some more time to get it right.
Lets not rush to judgment.

Look at it this way, this is the same as King George's Surge in Iraq,it needs more time to show you that it is working, because the surge has been a great success so far this month, with American deaths down, therefore they will need until the end of 2008 to prove victory is assured.
American death down=Surge is working

Freedom is on the march, and freedom spreading is a good thing.

To sum up,King George and his men? =above the law

Iraq,the US,and the world? =Much safer

Next? WE have have to make Iran,Syria, and possible Venezuela safe, from Tyranny.

We have a responsibility to spread freedoms to all the dark corners of the world, especially if they have OIL.

I have a GUT feeling that Saddam's WMDS were moved to Venezuela

All too ofter we whine and complain but in this instance...I stand by the DEM Party....what choice do I have? They have the Best Odds to correct the Republican Nightmare of Bush and his GOP enablers.

Thanks for the welcome pal,but I have posted here one time before though.
The truth is I am so frustrated with the Dem's.I thought they were really going to change course, instead they seem to be facilitating this immoral
Administration.

As a disabled Infantry viet nam war vet,1st Cav.5/7 battalion who was there in 1969,it irks me even more that Bush and his chicken hawk warmongers who glorify war,are the same ones who danced, ducked, and defered their way out of risking their own life when it was their turn to serve during the Viet Nam era, with all kinds of frivolous deferments.
I have little confidence that many of the Dem's really want to change course,I feel they only want to modify it.
The only Dem Candidate out there I see that really wants to make a real change is Kunichic.
With impeachment off the table, only Strong worded letters, and other lame excuses is not going to bring us change or justice,This admin has shown they respect no laws but their own.
Saying they are protecting America, they believe it gives them a license, and aright to do anything they want, and claiming executive privilege whenever we citizens want answers about their illegal activities,The Dem's has allowed the Bush cabal to roll over them like a bulldozer.
So far the Dem's Promise to stop King George after their victory in Nov has not stopped the Republican steamrolling one bit, even with all the investigations of the Bush cabal going on,the Dem's just talk tough and then go along with the program when push comes to shove

So,I have a feeling that when sleaze ball Cheney and his boys manufacture and set off the next"Terrorist Action"against American target.
It will be off to Iran, because I remember reading about 2 years ago that Cheney already said the next similar incident that Iran is supposed to be hit, even if they had nothing to do with it.EVIL DOERS.
We don't have to go hunting all over the world for evil doers we have some of the biggest ones right here:mad:

15. A chance to correct and/or supplement testimony?
WTF??? If you or I were to testify, what was said would be the final word. Who else is ever given a second chance to change testimony in and given court or legislative situation? Not you or I.

16. Scenrio: Testify to Congress, lie, tell half truths, bad memory then
come back three or four more times and do it all over again. After the fourth time the matter is forgotten and time to move on to another matter. Congress has done their job. They attended to something. Subpoenas: Issue them but when the subject refuses to show extend the time. After a few months it is forgotten and it is time to move on. I am so glad that I am not a Democrat.

18. Happens all the time where Congress is concerned.
Everyone who gets prosecuted for lying to congress or perjury under oath before congress (the penalties are identical, btw - and only the latter requires you to be sworn in under oath) gets this chance. A period of time is written into both houses' rules. It's when they refuse this chance and the clock runs out that they have persisted in a crime and Congress, which wants the truth more than people in jail, refers people to the Department of Justice (though in this case Congress might have to do the job itself, bleh).

Yes, if you or I were to testify, we WOULD be given this chance. And it happens in depositions a lot and so on and so forth. A large part of why this is done is elementarily simple: it's perjury if you have criminal intent. If you KNOW something is false after the fact, and still cling to the lie, you have demonstrated criminal intent.

Whereas, simply being ill informed and not knowing something is false when it is said, is not perjury. It is simply error.

...Having said all that, when the time runs out in a couple of days, Leahy had better move. Failure to do so will establish a precedent that will last a lot longer than the next 48 hours.

17. I'm assuming the *end of this week* means friday
So, it's not like Leahy is giving him a huge amount of time. In fact, with my calculations, it means one day over the date he testified.

So what is it with the *WTF* posts? Are we going to quibble about 24 hours now? I'm placing my trust in Leahy. He's smooth. He's not giving them much of anything to play with at this point.

BREATH people - BREATH.
