DNC to announce plans to assess voting suppression state by state.
Our candidates need to know how elections work in every single precinct,” said Howard Dean, the Democratic Party chairman. “That is an enormous advantage when you’re going up against a party that is essentially a vote suppressor.”

Democrats Plan to Assess Voting State by State

And more about the report due out tomorrow.

The Democratic Party will announce on Thursday a state-by-state effort to identify potential problems in how elections are administered before the 2008 presidential election.

In the 2000 and 2004 elections, there were widespread instances of voters being turned away from the polls because of a shortage of voting machines or the illegal removal of their names from registration lists. And despite changes made in federal election law in 2002, the 2004 election demonstrated that many states and localities were not enforcing them.

The committee will ask staff members to interview election officials in the country’s more than 3,000 counties, said Anna Martinez, director of the committee’s voting rights institute. Ms. Martinez said the interviews would address type of voting machines, how many are sent to a polling place and how absentee ballot requests and voter registrations are handled.

This will definitely be a plus since Congress is not doing anything.

Kudos to the DNC.

4. Well, I think the massive money flow to candidates...
and the congressional committees may have slowed things down.

Gotta get those hundreds of millions to choose a nominee.

5. Absolutely.
Thank you, Chairman Governor Dr. Dean, for heeding the voices of all the people who have worked long and hard to be heard.

After 2000 and 2004, what we want is an aggressive, pro-active effort, to prevent the kind of crimes we've seen committed against our country.

7. Why am I a Democrat?
I find myself in a pensive mood tonight, sadness mixed with nostalgia.

Why am I a Democrat? What drew me to this Party? Was it always as it is now?

This Democratic Party does not represent the sense of idealism or purpose or service that called me to it.

I'm remembering 1965 and Selma, Alabama. I'm remembering dogs and firehoses and tear gas and clubs and Bloody Sunday. And I'm remembering another President from Texas who cared so much for this country that he literally got sick over it. A President, saddled with Viet Nam, who longed not to be a war President, but a peace President.

I'm remembering a Southern man who risked rejection by so many because of his support for Civil Rights.

I'm remembering a speech to a joint session of Congress by a courageous President less than a week after Bloody Sunday.

I'm remembering why I became a Democrat.

12. Republicans...we are going to do that, too.
Yeh, right.

"The Republican National Committee said it also tried to ensure compliance. “We’re aware of the law and work with our state parties to make sure they not only understand the law but have the resources they need to comply with the law,” said Tracey Schmitt, press secretary for the Republican committee."

19. I read about that, but didn't fully understand how they would do it.
Then I read an article about how the GOP in CA is having financial problems. But that shouldn't bother them, they have the RNC to bail them out.

"Democrats to conduct nationwide survey of administration of elections
as part of an ongoing commitment to protecting the rights of every American

WASHINGTON, Aug. 2 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- As the 42nd anniversary
of the signing of the Voting Rights Act approaches, the Democratic National
Committee today announced its unprecedented 50-state election protection
effort to prepare for the 2008 election. When signing the Voting Rights Act
of 1965, President Lyndon B. Johnson said that the "right to vote is the
basic right without which all others are meaningless. It gives people,
people as individuals, control over their own destinies." But nearly 42
years after the signing of this legislation, the right to vote is still
under assault.

Through its 50 State Strategy, Voting Rights Institute and National
Lawyers Council, the DNC is conducting an in-depth nationwide survey to
collect critical data on voting practices and procedures at the local
level. The goal of the project is to map the often confusing and complex
sets of administrative practices and decisions governing election
administration in every state. Working with local election boards, the DNC
is examining the election mechanics in each state, flagging potential
problems and election administration issues that threaten to deprive
citizens of their right to register, vote and have their vote counted. Once
these issues are identified, the DNC will work to resolve potential
problems well in advance of the 2008 election. Election laws, while written
on the federal and state level, are often subject to interpretation at the
local level. This decentralized process results in varied administration
and supervision of the elections themselves, which can be potentially
problematic considering that in 2008, there will be at least 13,000
elections run by localities.

No organization has ever undertaken a project of this magnitude. This
project is made possible through the DNC's 50 State Strategy, which has had
staff on the ground in every state for almost two years. With very specific
questions, the survey covers topics such as voter registration, centralized
voter databases, voting systems and absentee voting, provisional balloting,
polling place procedures and Election Day preparation. This survey is just
one part of a comprehensive program on the part of the DNC to ensure that
every American's right to vote and have that vote counted is protected.
Data collected from the survey will be analyzed to determine the needs of
each election locality and next steps for strengthening the election
process in that locality. In addition to this project, the DNC will
continue its efforts to resolve the identified issues throughout next year,
continue to organize its network of lawyers in the states through the DNC's
Voting Rights Institute/National Lawyers Council and will run the most
extensive voter protection program throughout the country for the 2008
general election."
