Domenici pushed to make scandal 'one-day' story

ALBUQUERQUE -- When former U.S. Attorney David Iglesias initially claimed he had been forced from his job for political reasons, Sen. Pete Domenici's strategy for handling the issue was to "hopefully make this a one-day story."

According to documents released Friday by the Department of Justice, concerns that Iglesias was holding a Feb. 28 news conference in Albuquerque prompted a deputy to White House political adviser Karl Rove to alert top Republicans in Washington.

The deputy, Scott Jennings, sent an e-mail to Rove and other GOP and White House officials about an hour before Iglesias was to speak to reporters in New Mexico. The subject line is labeled, "NM USATTY -- urgent issue."

Jennings wrote that Steve Bell, Domenici's chief of staff, had just called and "urgently reported" Iglesias was ready to identify two members of Congress as having pressured him to rush indictments in a federal corruption probe shortly before the November elections.

The emails hanged him. THere is no privilege to exert once the information has been turned over in the form of emails.

Jennings tried to 'cherry pick' his questions to answer, and made no effective case for Executive Privilege other than to rely upon the letter from WH counsel.

Jennings has an independent duty to determine if Executive Privilege may be exerted or if he has to answer under subpoena. He basically admitted he did not make that determination prior to his testifying today.

Jennings made things much worse by trying to answer anything. His lawyer should have advised him to invoke his 5th Amendment Privilege like Monica Goodling. He is done.

He invoked executive privlidge on missing emails. Lehey HAD these emails all along. We now have proof that Executive Priv claim is bogus.
