McCain cancels NW fundraisers

WASHINGTON -- Arizona Sen. John McCain canceled scheduled fundraising events in Portland, Ore., and Seattle this week, saying he has to get back to Washington, D.C., to vote on important ethics legislation.

McCain, who is seeking the Republican nomination for president, canceled events Wednesday in Portland and Thursday in Seattle. He was in California on Wednesday but was flying back to Washington to participate in debate on a bill to make lawmakers disclose more details about efforts to fund pet projects and raise money from lobbyists.

DERRY, N.H.

- John McCain's slide in the presidential race shows up everywhere on the campaign trail.

His staff drastically reduced and his organization nearly broke, McCain flies commercial instead of on private jets, carries his own luggage and relies on supporters to drive him to events, including one who pulled away from a Rotary meeting last week with a flat rear tire.

On Monday, he missed a fundraising breakfast in Pittsburgh because his commercial flight was canceled. He called in by speakerphone to the 30 supporters in a hotel conference room.

5. Oh I hope he doesn't quit too soon.
It would be a shame if McCain quits so early - I want him to quit later, after he spends more money.
