Why I stay - a Revival -- ((((((((( Ripple Effect ))))))))))

((((((((( Ripple Effect ))))))))))

ripple effect: NOUN: A gradually spreading effect or influence:

image
of water, a brightness
not gold, not silver,
rippling
as if with laughter.
~ Denise Levertov ~

The pure serene of memory in one man,—
A ripple widening from a single stone
Winding around the waters of the world.
~Theodore Roethke ~

The ripple effect of DU is tremendous. Each one of us that stone that is tossed into the pond, each one of us tossing stones into the pond that is DU. We come here to learn, to share, to vent and to encourage and our actions, our posts, our arguments and our agreements ripple out and touch each other just as we are touched by the ripples of others.

We are a grassroots community made up of people that believe in some basic principles -- Life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. We see our world as precious and we see how frail it is. We recognize that we cannot change the world on our own; we know that there is strength in numbers and we each try our best to improve our corner of the world. We strive for acceptance, not just of our ideals and ourselves, but also for others and their values and their views.

We long for the nation we once knew, one that was the model of democracy for all others to follow and aspire to be like. In these last few years we have seen forces that seem beyond our control warp and distort everything we have held dear. We have been told that we are the minority and they have used our patriotism as a weapon against us and they have battered us like an abusive spouse, telling us with each blow to our liberties “if you love me, you will take it, I abuse you because I love you and I know what is best for you.” But we don’t believe them. We know it is about control and not love. It is about power and not justice. So we come here to remind each other and ourselves that we are not alone, that we are not the minority. We gather strength from each other and we share ideas. Because of the ripples we make in the pond, because of the ripples that touch us, we are willing to stand up and call them on their lies, we are armed with the truth. For we know what true love of country is and we know we are patriots.

We, the members of the grassroots community of DU, have made a difference and we will continue to do so. In January, we shut down congress’ telephones as we flooded the switchboards with calls and faxes and emails demanding someone stand with Conyers and Tubb-Jackson to oppose the certification of the Ohio votes. No, we didn’t change the outcome, but we made them hear us and we made them take notice. Our ripples were felt.

We must continue to do, to try, to share and to encourage. We must continue to reach out to each other and to reach for the stars. To not try is to be complicit in their crimes; to not try is to enable their evil, to encourage their corruption. We must continue to toss the stones into the ponds, we must continue to allow the ripples formed to carry us beyond their myths and beyond ourselves.

We have made a difference. In a week’s time we have raised almost $35,000 to help a member of our community afford surgery necessary to save his life. We have pinched our pennies, given what we can and extended our hands and our love, our prayers and our positive energies to one of our own.

As we reach out to help one man, as we unite to help Andy, our single efforts have had a ripple effect that we never expected, creating ripples that we can never count. The grassroots effort has been strengthened, the DU community united and our love has been multiplied a hundred times over. Our faith in humanity has been restored, our belief in each other and ourselves renewed, as we reach out to help someone we love. With laughter and determination, with humor and wit, we have reached out to help a friend and we will attain our goal. For we know that with faith and love (and laughter), all things are possible.

Our efforts continue and we continue to throw our stones into the ponds, hoping our ripples will join together to form the waves of relief so necessary. Not just for Andy but for our nation, for justice, for election reform, for health care, for civil rights for all, for all of the causes we each hold so dear, our environment, our freedoms, our children, our future and for peace.

I stand united with you all, I am proud to be a member of this community. Your ripples have touched me in ways that I will never adequately be able to express and your ripples have given me the courage to toss my own stones into the pond, to cause more ripples, to try to make a difference, to try to save my corner of the world.

Bless you all . . .

The sentiments I expressed when I originally posted this thread are just as strong today as they were when first posted.

I may not have the opportunity or the inclination to be as active as I once was, but I still find DU to be a safe harbor and a source of encouragement. How wonderful to have found a board and a community that help me remember that I am not alone and to remind me that my love of country is shared by thousands.

I may find the bickering annoying, the naysayers discouraging, the failings of our leaders disheartening but these things do not take away from the community and the purpose. A soapbox to stand on when I am frustrated; a source to come to for the news that matters (complete with editorials and rebuttals); a resource to take advantage of when disputing the distortions of the right; and, a place to come for a cyber hug or warm words from friends or laughs that only the DUzies can bring.

There are far too many names to list to thank and to give kudos to, some long gone but never forgotten like Andy and oneighty, some no longer allowed to post but still out there in the cyberhood we all share. DU gave me the courage to share the sentiments expressed above and DU saved my life as expressed in this thread http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_mesg&forum=364&topic_id=2217737&mesg_id=2231124.

I've not always agreed with the admin and the mods, I still disagree with the admins refusal to allow some long timers and former DUers the chance to return, but those disagreements and the bickering won't stop me from coming here because they don't define DU. We, the members, define DU and we are an incredible lot. I don't want the echo chambers that other boards accuse DU of being. I want to disagree without fear of banishment as much as I need agreement when unsure and that I can do here at DU.

So, that is why I stay and why you won't see a goodbye thread from me. When things get tough, when the squabbling too much, I will take a vacation as I have be known to do, but I won't leave, the trolls and the lurkers can't have my home. After Katrina many graciously offered me homes away from the ruin, I couldn't leave my home, it is where I belong and that is how I feel about DU. Despite the storms and the surge and the wreckage this place is my internet home. I may fade away but I will never leave DU, how do you leave your home?

Never.Give.Up.

I DU believe. :patriot:

... i've been away from my computer for the last day+ and logged on this evening to find all sorts of good-bye's... it is so disconcerting. touching off so many familiar feelings of loss, sadness- hoplessness.

It is important to remember that as uncomfortable as DU can be, it is also a unique place, where much good has been done and witnessed- and it remains a place of possibilities and support. I will miss those who have left, and hope for their return- I'm also grateful for those who choose to stay, and struggle through this trying time.

Thank you for reminding all of us what a special place this is-

may all know peace, wisdom, comfort and healing~

The heart and soul of the Democratic Party is not the politicians, it's the rank and file members. I can't even count how many great Democrats I know who fight hard for what's right, some on this site, many who have never even heard of it. I'm not leaving the party or DU just because a group of Blue Dogs is screwing up the votes. The majority of the party stands for what I stand for and I'm working hard to make that number larger so we won't have to worry about them anymore. Replace the Blue Dogs or make their votes insignificant. That's the goal I'm aiming for.

Edited on Mon Aug-06-07 12:34 AM by calimary
Lots of anguish, what? Disquietude maybe? Did I just make up a goofy new word?

Anyway, thanks SO MUCH for this, merh! I think we all need to take a moment and read through this. It was MOST comforting to read the first time around. And it is equally comforting, or maybe even MORE comforting, this time.

annabanana had a thread like this elsewhere here. Its bottom line was the same sort of message - that we need each other because we buttress each other. We lift each other up. We create that magic "sum of its parts" that's greater and more powerful than any of us alone and isolated. Kinda like the Beatles, maybe. We create each other's talking points. The messages and musings we generate here filter outward beyond our own little - as she put it - insular community as we ourselves spread them to others around us. And if they're memorable enough, they may in turn get spread yet again.

Here's the annabanana thread:

LIVING
By Denise Levertov

The fire in leaf and grass

so green it seems

Livingeach summer the last summer

The wind blowing, the leaves

shivering in the sun,

each day the last day.

A red salamander

so cold and so

easy to catch, dreamily

moves his delicate feet

and long tail. I hold

my hand open for him to go.

Each minute the last minute.

50. people have to remember disruptors know how to seem like there are more of them than in reality
Consider this poll of DUers a few years back:

http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_mesg&forum=104&topic_id=5567638&mesg_id=5567638

11% self-identified as moderates and a bare 2% publicly acknowledged preferring the DLC in an ANONYMOUS poll.

the plurality were progressive democrats at 48% followed by those left of the democrats at 38%.

You might not guess that break down by looking at the threads sometimes, but when you drill down, you see the responses disagree or or people simply let the thread die.

A good case in point was the recent Cindy Sheehan brouhaha. She thought people here didn't support here because of that thread loading phenomena, but when a someone posted a poll, it showed overwhelming support for her.

51. They have posters patting each other on the back
for their cruel posts, admitting that they sacrificed a valued sock (troll), but that it was worth it. They are here and it is a cruel hobby that they have, to be the ones that cause DUers to leaver or derail threads or get them locked in flame wars. When things get too much, step back, take a break. You control your response to them, they don't.

The best example was the whole fake "talking about Jeff Gannon" is homophobic brouhaha.
